Default Remote Starter pros/cons

I was wondering if anyone has a remote starter on their car? I know most cars on here are manual, but if by chance you have an auto w/ power locks and remote start, or have experience/knowledge in this area, what are the pros and cons of remote start? Thanks in advance

Pro's...
-Convenient
-Cheap
-Good for your motor(if that's all you care about warming up)

Con's...
-Just something else to break I guess? IDK, I've worked at Circuit City for a year, and we've never had any returns on them. They really don't go fault as long as they're installed right the first time. Only once has an installer cut the wrong wire or something and fried the ECU. It's pretty easy to do if you're not experienced. I guess there's some risk involved with the install, but other than that, I don't see a problem with having it.

Yup, as long as it's done right the first time

Depends on the car obviously. Some cars are easier than others.

I was an installer for 5 years a while ago, so I do them on the side for certain people. With the bypass kits now, and my lack of access to directechs, I have stopped installing them. My last one was on a 2007 Trailblazer, using a databus bypass. The owner complains that it doesn't start consistantly, and I have NO idea why, and I can't mimic the problem.

Bottom line, if you have a fairly simple, straightforward (Japanese) car then you should have no issues.

DEI or Compustar should be your only questions now.

I forgot to mention it is going on a 2002 Honda Civic.

What are DEI and Compustar? Are those the largest manufacterers?

One of he biggest cons, especially for manuals, is leaving it in gear and well... it takes off on you. I did that once, but I had the parking brake on so I didn't lose her.

if your car gets broken into, its easier to trace your starter wires

Only a concern if you install an alarm that wasn't designed for a manual transmission car.

True, but even with one designed for a MT, if not properly installed it would still pose a concern.

That can be said of every product in this forum.

The starter motor has more than enough torque to move a vehicle by itself.

Stick with remote starts that are compatible with standard transmissions if you have a standard transmission. 94

One of my fellow installers told me a while ago that he and his buddies used to have remote start "races" in empty parking lots . Said that his crx always won lol.

Must be that honda torque!

I have a remote start on my vx. Just remember to take it out of gear before you remote start it.

All it takes is one time of you forgetting and your front end is fu[/i]cked, at the bare minimum.

Better advice would be to just get a remote starter designed for a manual transmission.

I wonder why it is so hard for people to grasp the concept, get the right part for the job. 94
