Remote start?
I know remote start is probably not as hard as it sounds, but after reading some of the forums, people have problems with getting it to work. This is a feature I might want on either my auto or 5 speed but I want to do some research first. What are the main wiring/connections to a remote start? Is there any programing to do other than the tach learning? I'm looking into the viper 560 xv with remote start, and after looking at the online manual it gets confusing, what is the difference between the "remote start ribbon" and the "remote start harness?"

If you have never done any car wiring, (aside from an amplifier/box install) I wouldn't recommend it. It is easy on older cars, and next to impossible on newer ones.
Your major connections for any remote start will be (All found at ignition harness)
Constant 12v
Starter Wire (+)
Ignition 1 (+)
Accessorry (+)
Brake wire (+ when brake is pushed)
Parking lights (+ or - when parking lights turned on)
Now on your average Civic, this is a simple install for the most part. If you are going to install this on a standard car, you have to bypass the clutch switch. (NOT recommended...) Also, DEI is an excellent choice in equipment, but remember that they will not honor the warantee if you do not have a shop install it.
Remote start ribbon harness - Connects the remote start 'brain' to the external relay pack.
Remote start harness - Usually the thickest gauge wire connecting to the ignition harness.

I've installed an alarm before and am familiar with all the wiring, but I was confused about remote start features. So what are the kinds programming that needs to be done for remote start to work?
The amount of work will depend on the car you install it in, a remote start is no more difficult to install and program then most alarms, JDM_EJ pointed out some of the main connections...
1-constant power input, [most remote starts have 2 main powers]
2- acc. output, for heater and A/C, [most cars only need 1 but some need 2]
3- ign. output, for cars ign, system, [most cars only need 1 but some need 2 and 3]
4- starter output, to turn motor over, [most cars have 1 but some have 2]
The above will be heavy gauge.
5- tachometer, for engine sensing, [you can also use fuel injector]
6- foot brake input, [every car I have ever done has a pos. (+) brake output]
7- park light flash
8- hood pin
The above are connections you need for remote start on an auto
9- door trigger
10- "E" brake
11- clutch interlock bypass
Above also needed on 5 speeds
12- status/ground out when running is needed if car is equipped with oem immobilizer, [transponder key] bypass module also needed.
Keep this in mind, DEI, [Viper] does not make a remote start for a standard.

First of all, tell us the year/make/model. If it's a late model, it may require additional parts and possibly an extra key which you can only get through the dealership.
The only programming would be to set it up for voltage sensing so you don't have to hookup the tach wire.
I'm not sure about that alarm but the Viper 791XV has some heavy gauge wires and a total of 4 power wires! The heavy gauge are a pain in the *** to solder. You'll also need a hood pin, a brake wire, and the parking brake (when it calls for neutral safety).

One word: EASY.
I could have a remote start installed and the car back together in 20 minutes.
