Default Recommendations for a GPS?

Looking to get an entry level GPS for my friend's new car and I'm hoping to spend less than $250. I'm fairly new at this so the only brands I know are Garmin, Tom Tom, and Magellan,Xtrons. Are these all worthy manufacturers? Any suggestions as to which may be better than the others?

I sport the Garmin Nuvi....love that damn thing. Updates maps via USB, etc.... great pickup.

Either that or tell your friend to go get a droid. Google Maps FTW! ;-)
