Default Quick amp and sub install question

Im putting a sub and amp in a friends car a 2000 Chrysler LSH and he's using the stock head unit. Now when he brought all his stuff over he had a little box thing some kind of inverter that splices into the rear speaker wires and converts them into the plugs that go into the amp for the input. Sorry if that sounds a little confusing. Is this the best way to hook an amp up to a stock head unit? I have never done this before so I just thought id check before I finish up the job.

Thanks
Dan

Unless the amp has speaker-level inputs, that's the only way to hook an amp up to a stock head unit.
