Question about electrical drain on planned setup
Hey,
I'm putting a modest system in my 94 Prelude SI: Eclipse H/U, Eclipse amp 50x4 watts RMS (EA3422, don't know the amperage on this) to drive separates in front and coaxials in back, and no sub. I know this isn't heavy by hardcore car audio standards, but I love reliability and I really want my battery and alternator to enjoy long healthy lives. It's a PITA when something goes out! So I'm wondering, is this system cause for concern, and would installing a capacitor or something help with longevity?
Also: Will the amp draw power when the car is running even if the stereo is off? If so, would it be a good idea to install a switch - in the center console, say - to cut power to the amp when I'm not listening to anything?
Thanks,
-Dan

dan, that system is very modest and you shouldn't have any problems - assuming that your factory charging system is in good condition - and that includes the cables!!
I'd recommend you check the factory grounds for the engine to chassis and battery to chassis. Make sure they are all solid. so long as the alternator and battery are in good condition, you are fine.
The amplifier is only going to draw what current it needs to make the power you are asking of it - also keep in mind that music is very dynamic - rarely if ever will you hit the max current requirements of that amp for extended periods of time. When sitting "idle" amplifiers draw VERY little current.

Damn, when I bought the car it had an HKS Circle Earth ground wire system, and I let the seller take it off because he wanted to keep it. I didn't have to let him have it at the last minute. Oh well, I'll make sure all the grounds are solid. Thanks!
