Problems with Alpine head unit. help!!!
I have an Alpine 9856 in my 99 coupe, ive had the head unit for 6 months never had a problem with it until last night. I was driving and all of a sudden the sound just cut off, but the head unit was still on and playing. Later on my way home it just cut back on without me even touching it. This morning when i got in my car it worked for about 3 minutes and then cut off again. I pulled it out checked the fuses (including the one in the back of the head unit itself) and the connector harness and everything was fine. Im no electrician so i dont know where to go from here! Do Alpine head units just suck? this is the 2nd one that has broken on me
, anyway any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

It sounds like a speaker or speaker lead is shorting out and the HU is going into protection mode, [no sound but everything else works fine].
If the front speakers are not stock then I would start there, a common problem with installing aftermarket speakers in the doors of a lot of Honda/Acura cars is if care is not taken the aftermarket speakers terminals may touch the doors sheet metal, [ground] causing a short that the HUs protection circuit would detect, the protection mode would trigger, cutting power to the HUs output stage.
