A friend got a police scanner like 15 years ago. Once in a rare while, you'll hear something remotely interesting. 99% of the time is down right boring.

As a youngster, it was interesting. We figure we can find out all the police action on a Sat night. That never happened. I say, don't waste your money on it. If you want to be informed, listen to news radio on your AM dial. They got traffic, and police action that relates to you and need to know.

I agree with GoLowDrew. The other thing is that it is illegal to have a police scanner in your car. For just the reason you want it. Most if not all cops will give you a hard time about it. A friend of mine has one in his car but he gets away with it because he is a vol. Fire Fighter. You can go buy the police/fire/air frequency books. But I will be honest with you, the frequencies that are listed are not the ones that they really use a whole lot. Even with the frequencies that he has it is pretty boring. If anything just buy a portable one so you can just sit in your house and listen to phone converstations.

i dont think that would actually work bc of how the radar signal works from their "guns". they work on the doppler effect and on the changing frequencies bouncing off your ride. there is basically not too much u can do once they hit ya with the signal. if ur coming towards them, the frequency increases....letting em know ur smokin by....if ur going away from them the frequency that returns to the cop's "gun" decreases...letting em know ur speeding too. so the idea of a "radar" absorber sounds like a huge gimic to me IMO. oh well...just my $0.02

It's legal to have a police scanner in your car.

OK I guess I have to correct my self. Somebody told me that scanners are illeagal to have in a car in NJ. I do know that scanners that have the police frequencies in them will get the cop to harrase you beyond no end. I have been in a car with a scanner, and we got pulled. The cop asked to see what was programed into the scanner.

I do believe that Scanners are illegal in some states. I think I remember hearing they are illegal in my state (WA)

I'm not sure of every state's law, but i do know that you are free to listen to anything that is broadcast over the air waves w/o encryption... so says the FCC.

I agree that i'd hate to have a cop see it though.

SO BORING! My friend got one at Best Buy for $100. It was cool, but all they say is codes, so good luck understanding it. It sucked. We asked a Sheriff what frequency they used and he told us, then he said " you 2 arent using for illegal reasons?"

LOL, like a thief would admit that!

I think you mean radar "jammer".... they throw out radar signals that confuse the police radar. they're also ileagal in most states, and most police around here are switching to laser anyway.
