Default need help

i got a multimeter, which setting would i put it on to test wires and find a short?and what range would it jump to?

If you are looking for, say a wire shorted to ground, set it to "continuity" that's the one that when you touch the probes together the meter will beep a steady tone as long as they are touching, ground one probe to the cars chassis, and test the wires, when you hear the beep you have found the short, the meter will also read 000 for a dead short, but it can also beep, [and "show" a short] under other circumstances, EG: if the fuse for the dome light was blown and you probe the pos. (+) lead running to the light, and a door is open, [dome light has a ground] the meter would see that as a short and would beep.
