Default MB Quarts install

I currently have an Alpine head unit and I just bought some MB Quarts 6.5" component speakers. These are the ones that come with a 1" tweeter and a crossover. How would you recomend I install these? Should I run new speaker wires all the way to the head unit? Also, the Alpine can change the Hz (I think) for HPF and LPF. What do these mean and how should they be set? Thanks alot in advance!

Sounds like you are running them from your head unit? And I'm assuming that you want to run them up front.

Well, with the low power (10-15W) that your headunit will supply, the stock speaker wires will be fine. Unfortunately, you will have to mount the x-overs in the doors as well.

Take your door panels off, and remove the stock speakers. There will be two wires coming in from the headunit. Hook them up to the input section on the x-over, then run new wire to the midbass and tweeter. This should be documented in the instructions as the the correct terminals.

Now depending on where you mount the tweeter, you may need to change the phase. If the tweeters are far away from the mids, maybe at the top of the door, or by the side mirrors, you may want to try wiring them out of phase. The xover may have a switch for this. If not, just switch the +tive and -tive wires on the crossover.

I would also suggest setting the tweeter to it's lowest setting, as they can get bright otherwise.

The LHF and HPF refer to low pass and high pass filters. If you do not have subs, then you want to run them full range, and see how it goes. If you do have subs, or you want to be able to turn them up a bit louder with out bottoming out, then you want to use the highpass filter. Without subs start around 50Hz, if you have subs, then start around 80Hz and play with the settings to get the best sound.

Yes, they will be run in the doors. I have an EX which has the tweeter locations at the top of the door, and I will use that spot. I don't beleive the x-over has a switch so you think I should switch the + and - on each side?

No, I don't have any subs right now. So I should set LPF and HPF to the highest Hz or lowest Hz? I believe the headunit has 2 or 3 choices for each.

Thanks a lot for the detailed answer, it was a big help!

No problem.

If you are running the tweets up there, then I would suggest both switching the phase (made a big diff in my car) and setting the tweet levels as low as possible (-4 dB I think)

In this application, you only want to use one or the other when it comes to filters. You use the HPF to keep the bass out of the speaers. Those drivers are not desiged to play bass notes. They can, just not very efficiently. Try them full range (no filter). If you notice that they pop, or make some weird noises when the bass hits and you have it turned up, then try the lowest setting on the highpass filter - it 50Hz on my headunit.

That should get you going.
