Default Make me a recommendation - Head unit

I'm looking at spending inbtwn $200-300 (max)

I want a head unit that looks decent (nothing circa 80s), plays mp3, cd etc. I dont need some $1000 show car system. I only want to use a deck and aftermarket speakers. Looking for quality and clarity.

I'm super clueless bout car audio.

lol thanks yo...

I should of been more descriptive in my paragraph. I wanted a pretty decent system w/o the use of an amp/sub cuz of weight issues. But I was told I needed a decent deck to do that. I should of ask what deck the racers or weight concerned ppl use.

Neways thanks.

when a deck comes with a sub output it is not heavier, its just a wire that comes out the back of the deck, 98% of decks that are sold have a sub output, you dont have to use it if you dont want subs.

Neways thanks.</TD></TR></TABLE> OK. I race my car, [autocross] and I have an Alpine CDA-7893 HU, no amps or sub, This is Alpines "Type R" HU It has been stripped of all excess weight, lowered, and a high performance suspension system, [for CD transport] I have done some extra weight reduction, I have removed the RCA pigtails and the metal bracket that holds them, I have installed a carbon fibre top cover, and added a rear brace, I have dropped the curb weight of that puppy by a whopping 1/2 OZ and it has resulted it at least 1 sec. drop in my run times, next year I am going to add a 50W shot of nitrous to it , you know for bass response. 94

I have a Pioneer DEH 8500 in my car. It's not brand new, but you could find one on E-bay probably. Mine ran for a little bit more than you seem to want to spend new when I bought it, but it should be waaay cheaper now. It plays MP3's, has dual faces, and always gets comments from people getting into my car for the first time. I've also been told it's good for setting up a killer system, though I've never tried it myself so I can't confirm or deny that. It's not the newest, but it gets the job done for me. The only thing I don't like about it is that (being about 2 years old now) I can't get the Pioneer iPod adapter for it.
