There was no "master key". They were using a screwdriver. My car is covered because I have a jimmy jammer.

I shop at that mall on a regular basis.

most likely those "teens" were targeting cars without alarms...

and since they didn't strip the cars... they're a small threat...

but if they were doing it to prove to some "leader" of a car theft ring...

 

I really don't draw any distinction. A thief is a thief. Whether they're successful or not, whether they are kids or adults, whether they merely take the possessions inside vs the whole car... they need to be dealt with in such a way that they will never steal again. Jail time, a bad record, or any insane degree of punishment... these have proven wholly ineffective except to satisfy society's craving for revenge. I wish I had caught them. I would have satisfied my own personal craving for revenge.

I'm sure not much. I really think the problem is a lack of concern with police and a lack of good punishment when thieves are actually caught. The police don't do much, if anything, to prevent or deal with auto break-ins and theft. And when a thief is caught, he might go to jail for a little while...But as soon as he's out...he's back out doing the same ****.
