help me trouble shoot this install
here is the deal. Did an install for a friend of a friend (paying) on wednesday. Other then a horrible mess left from the previous really really bad install job where the stock wireing harness was cut out!! IT was a big mess but i eventually figured it out. Everything went fine. Shortly after him leaving, he called his friend (my buddy) and told him that the sound all of a sudden stopped. Headunit was still on and playing but no sound, from any speaker. I know my connections are good and didnt come out so thats not it. They have numerous zip ties and tape wrapped around so to keep it neet. SO what could cause this? The person bought the CD player somewhat used, i believe it was the display unit. Any suggestions are appriciated. I have to go back tommorow and fix it, or try to. If i cant im just gonna remove it and he wont pay me for it. I feel so defeated. I was refered to this guy as being pretty knowledgeable....i dont want my credibility to be shot from this.
trying using another deck if you got a spare one to see, its probably internal in the deck if all the connections are good. Id just double check them and if they are fine its the head unit. Wiring is wiring you cant help the actually unit if its defective
The most common mistake I see with Audio installs is mistaking the Illumination wire for a power supply wire.. The illumination power supply wire will supply power until the headlights are turned on, then power is cut, while memory power still exists.. The amount of power supplied will vary upon the setting of the interior light dimming switch.. The outcomes are not very pretty and can do alot of damage when the resistance is set too low..
Is there an amp somewhere in the system?
try banging on the dash to duplicate a sound/no sound situation, in most cases this would mean there is an internal problem within the head unit.. good luck..

ok, first off i respect your oppinions and insight on this situation. I have been doing installs for a while but it sounds like you either run a shop or have just done it more. I dont think this is totally my fault, although i feel really bad abut it cause like **** poor quality on my part. The guy did however say that the radio wouldnt work when the lights were on. I Think that must be it. When i started i was working with many loose wires...literally. There were no stock plugs, they had been cut off and i was testing for 12V power to try and find a wire in this car (early 90 corolla, i think 91). I could have mistaken if as the illumination wire because i never bothered to turn the headlights on. However, in my defense, most of the time you dont find the wiring in this condition. But anyway, i thought it could be the headunit at first bcaues it was a display model that had been running for along time but i will chck it out tommorow and let you know.
Any other ideas???

take it out and check the wires, then swap a spare deck just to see if its the deck. if not check the settings on the deck. shouldnt be anything else. (assuming that he doesnt have amps)
