Just buy a $150 Garmin from best-buy or something.

If you just need directions get the Garmin or tom-tom. Magellan is also a good company for portable GPS.

Well, it just depends on what type/style you need.

the garmin is deffently the better unit to choose from... not only that but they update more often... one i would recommend would be the garmin 1300 lmt... thats the 1300 lifetime maps traffic.... so every quarter when they come out with new maps plug you gps into the comp and just download them.... traffic on the other hand is a 18" antenna thats built into the power cord and if there is slow traffic or a accident and someone reported it, the unit will let you know if it is in your route...

right now that unit is currently onsale at bestbuy for $139.99 and reg $219.99... and a bunch of other retailers do sell it as well...

as of indash nav its much more costly... varying between the vehicle you have a double din option or a single din "flip up" units... they can range between $400-$1000 easy... as far as updating them you norm have to contact the manu... like kenwood or pioneer... upside is that ever thing is all in one and you dont have a gps on the dash.... down side is thats its more likely to be stolen so i hope you have a decent alarm on there witch still wont help much... i think for watcha looking for as far as a gps to get you from point a to b i would just get a stand a lone gps like a garmin or tom tom...

if you have any questions let me know...
