Default Head-Unit Troubles

Hey guys, having a bit of headunit issues and was wondering if anyone could lend some insight on if they think its wiring or the headunit itself before I pull the dash apart to check.

Its an Alpine CDE-9881 and if I turn it up to volume level 20 or above it cuts in and out on me. Like at level 20, it will just blackout like it has no power. Then, in about 2 seconds, it turns right back on, resumes playing the cd right where it was and retains the same volume level. Below 20, it works fine, no complaints.

Any clues?

Thanks

It's either starving for power or there's a ****-poor ground. Could also be a speaker grounding out at higher volumes.

Ditto the above ^^^ although I would go with power or ground, probably ACC. power as "it will just blackout like it has no power" and does not initialize when it comes back on although it could still be the constant power, a few sec. may not be enough to loose memory.

I would definitely pull the HU and inspect the wiring, at the same time rewire the constant power, [yellow] to the batt., run a fused 12ga lead from the batt. pos.(+) to behind the HU and connect the HUs yellow lead to it, don't forget to cap off the stock constant power.
I would also add a 12ga chassis to chassis, from chassis of HU to the cars chassis, may not be needed if chassis is already grounded, [depending on MM&Y of car] to cars chassis with mounting.

The stock constant power can not supply the current needed by the Alpine HUs "high power" internal amp. 94

Ya sounds like i'm just gonna have to go in there. I just wire the ground on my stereos into the wiring adapter, maybe I should put a new connector on the power cord and make a dedicated ground wire to try and fix it.

btw car is a 99 gsr...

Leave the ground where it is and add the chassis to chassis ground.

On a 99 Teg you should be able to use a metal "L" bracket off the back of the HU and mount it to the stock rear support brace, mount it like the stock HU was mounted, that will be all the ground you need to add. 94
