I just installed a fuel cut off switch for my Civic. I followed the diagram from page 2 of the thread below:

Anyway, I hooked everything up just like what the diagram says, which is below:

...except I added a 1 amp diode and connected it to 85 and 86.

When I flipped the ignition ON, I saw smoke coming out of the diode and no fuel pump prime. I immediately shut it off. I turned on the ignition again and this time no smoke, still no fuel pump prime, turned off ignition. Then I flipped the switch. Tried the process again and still no fuel pump prime, no smoke. Look under the dash and I blew the 15A fuse for the fuel pump.

I'm getting another fuse later. My question is, what should I expect when I get the new fuse? Will I blow it again or was that just a first time thing? Why did I blow the fuse the first time? I don't want smoke coming out of my car every time I turn on the ignition, along with that smoke smell I dont wanna keep blowin the fuse either... I wonder if I did something wrong... anyone?

And I did put the negative side of the diode towards 86...

Here is my version:

fused 12 volts from pump 87 and 85 or 86 and 30

ground with switch added on 86 or 85

output to fuel pump 30 or 87

DEpending on the relay you are using...the diode is not needed ( Bosche/ P&B)
some cheapies from china you definately need it.

ok, i bought a new 15A fuse and installed it. Tryed it and again, a lil smoke came out from the diode and no fuel pump prime. I flipped the switch and tried again, same result. Looked at the new fuse and it's blown again.

Anyone with ideas? Why do I keep blowing fuses? Is that diagram above wrong?

should I just diss this relay crap and just stick the switch in the wiring?

I just read your d.i.y switch the fuse from a 15a to a 25a thats what this guy did and he also stated that he keeped flowing fuses .......how far is the switch away from the actuall splice you did? the farther the switch is from the splice the thicker gauge wire you want to use

well the problem was the diode. The diagram above does not have a diode, but I added one and connected it to 85 and 86, with the negative on the 86 side. I used this schematic for reference to the diode:


I showed a friend and he told me to cut the diode. We did that and now it works like a charm. He says the diode is placed wrong on that schematic and should be put with the negative side towards 85. He told me to just go without a diode.

whats the point of a relay? or a diode ? or whats better doing it this way instead of the curkens*sp one?

 

Just wondering....why do you have two relays? Both 85s will receive power which essential engerize the coil. You might be able to save yourself some wiring and just use one relay.
