Default External crossovers

I'm not up on all the latest high tech A/V equipment available today but I've noticed that the external xx-over seems to be a thing of the past.
A friend of mine suggested that I bypass my Bostwic 3 channel xx-over and use the one supplied in my head unit. (Sony MP 850) Doesn't sound too bad so far. My JBL amps are old and the xx-over is just a cut off switch and sounds terrible. So how many of you out there still use the separate xx-over unit?

I plan to soon, using my amplifier. I downgraded to a unit with two preouts, one for front and one for rear speakers. Headunit has no crossovers, so I'll have the speaker amp take care of keeping all ~80 hz and lower noise out. Hop the rear RCA's over to the bass amp as well, have bass amp block out ~80 hz and higher.

Also, a friend of mine had external crossovers for his component speakers in an Accord. Came with the speakers though. For most part they are a thing of the past, mostly as they can't be easily adjusted on the fly. I prefer head unit crossovers with 3 pre-out sets, but I'm seeing what I can make of an old Kenwood MP3028.

I'm rocking my ol' Sony MP 850 with 3 pre-outs using the xx-over in the unit. Two JBL GTQ 400 amps, one driving my fr. & rr. 6.5" components and the other briged on my subs. Just nice not to have to deal with all the extra wires and cables!

What kind of speakers do you have? If you have a component system is needs the external x-over. If you have co axial speakers they are all going to be built into the speaker using resistors and what not.

Or are you talking about a x-over between your radio and amp?
If so yea all the new radio have that built in mostly to control your hpf or lpf out to the amp. Which would be you front and rear (hpf) and sub (lpf). There should also be a setting on the amp which will allow you to control what you want the amp to do as well.

I have four 6.5" Infinty component sets w/ their xx-overs. I'm using the xx-over supplied in the head unit cause the cut-off xx-over on the amps suck. The signals are filtered in the RCA lines before they reach the amps for the components or subs.

I used my 3-way xx-over for the longest time till someone suggested I try the one in the head unit and the sound quality wasn't all that different. It's just alot less to worry with considering all the wires and RCA cables I was able to eliminate for a cleaner set up.

The only downfall is running the wires into the cabin, it's a PITA.
