educate me on which audio components to get
so now that its headed towards the spring, its time to make a change. I'm just starting to look into audio equipment..nothing to fancy but something that will sound nice.
currently i have a 99 si with a sony HU (came with the car) I'm going to switch that out with an alpine.
So far I was thinking 2 10" subs along the trunk wall or 1 sub in the spare tire well. I need the seats to fold down for snowboard/stuff..but this is all up in the air, also some amp better speakers etc.
I or a friend will be doing fiberglass so boxes wouldn't be needed.
I know its not alot, but I'm trying to do this for a budget of 1000 or less...pref less.
I will be doing my research too, but this is all a foreign languge to me
thanks for the help

There are more then a few good component speakers out there including Alpine, JL Audio, Infinity and Eclipse to name but a few, I would recommend that you hit up your local car audio dealers, bring along a couple fave. CDs and have a listen and pick the ones you like the sound of.
As for amps you can't go wrong with JL Audio, same goes for the subs. 94

currently i'm running stock, so whatever came with the car. The guy i bought it from didn't mention anything about speakers
I'll go to my local audio dealer and try speakers out, from what i've been readaing infinity and eclipse are among the fav.
how about subs? are they worth it for a small system and nothig fancy?

That will also depend on tast, I do not run a sub, or amps, just a HU and 4 speakers although I have spent a lot of time on custom door speaker mounts and rear speaker cabinets to get the best possible sound out of the speakers, so for the music I listen to, [and volume] I don't need a sub. 94

I would look at a sealed box and subs that use less airspace. Premier makes a decent 10" sub that uses about .65 cu ft of space (there are others - this is the first that came to mind). Or consider a single 12" shallow mount if you're extremely conscious about room:
