</TD></TR></TABLE> Yes you will have to charge it , unlike a batt. tha cap will no hold a charge very long.

Actually if you dont short the leads it should hold its charge for a very lomg time.

I should have said relative to a batt., the point is you should not assume that it has a charge, trying to charge a charged cap can't hurt, but just hooking up an uncharged cap can damage it.

To clarify, the only damage you will do to an uncharge cap by charging without a resistor is the arcing may damage the gold plated finish.
It will not harm the cap functionaly in any way.

Will you hear the difference? That depends on a lot of different things, for the most part I would say most people wouldn't.
Your electrical system and alternator will thank you and you get the added benifit of not having strobe lights.

It wont damage it electrically but the arcing could cause damage to the contact. If you don't care about cosmetics then its no big deal.
The other plus of using that resistor is if you hook it up backwards its a little safer. Electrolytic capacitors blow up when hooked up backwards.

man, i remember some of those little (.1 uf) capacitors blowing up in highschool electronics class and they made a decent bang. I could only imagine a 1 farad cap blowing
Might be fun to watch though...
