On this car I bought, it came with this black chip that's flat and maybe two inches wide. It slides into a slot on the dash and basically without that chip, the car won't start. Everyone told me "it's just two ignition wires behind that thing". Well, I unscrewed the piece that you slide the chip into and it's like 6 black wires.

I decided to just keep it since taking it off would leave a big hole in my dash and I have no idea how to rewire it to make it work without it. But my question is, does anyone know where to buy spare chips for this security system? It only came with one... and if I lose it I'm basically screwed. The previous owner of the car didn't put it on there (already asked him about it), but the owner before him did.

I recommend you get rid of that as soon as you can. If you don't know how to do this, have it done professionally. These things have a high rate of failure, since you admit that you don't know how to bypass this, it has the chance to leave you stranded. If you are worried about the hole then you just need to wire around the unit then leave the unit in place.

 

The dealer that I bought my wrx from installed these in all of their cars for insurance purposes. If you got it from a dealer they can give you a "shunt" that bypasses the chip. Without the shunt it won't start either

Hrm... guess I need to call up some friends to see if they can rewire this thing. Was hoping it was something worth keeping.
