Default amplifier wiring

I was thinking of wiring an amp but instead of using chassie for the ground, can I hook up both wires to the battery with fuses for positive and negative.
Also would I have to change the stock altinator for a 400 watt amp?

you could use the battery terminal as a ground but why would you want to? it's best to keep your wiring as short as possible.

you can run the ground to the battery. ive seen it done on high current wattage systems. supprisingly enuff there was no engine whine at all. i dont see the need to fuse a ground wire.

Depends on how big your system is.

For 400 watts, I wouldn't worry about it. Your headlights may dim a bit on bass hits, but you don't need to wory about it. I had 2 300 watt amps in my civic with the stock alternator.
