Default Alarm Install Question

I stopped a shop to inquire about an alarm purchase and install. I asked how much it would be to remove a factory alarm. I was told they usually leave them in and with out the transmitters in use, it would have no affect. Is this typical? It seems half assed. I'm concerened that if the oem unit malfunctions it could lead to problems down the road. They did seem accomodating in the sense that they would work with me to do the install specific to my needs.
Thanks

you cant take out the factory alarm, if it is a true factory alarm and not jsut a dealer installed aftermarket alarm. the brain for the factory alarm controlls a whole bunch of things and you dont take it out. that would jsut cause problems. due to the fact that most new cars come with some kind of alarm, aftermarket alarms are designed to integrate with factory systems. thats jsut the way it is.

It's an 01 teg, so I don't think it was a std feature. I think it was an oem accessory if that makes a difference. Maybe the shop thought it was built into the car and not an accessory and that's why they wouldn't take it out.

And I can assure you that it was a OEM installed by the dealer when the car was purchased. There are options like a six tone siren and a motion detector that could be added. There are also ways to make use of aftermarket items to make your factory alarm more efficient.

Does it cause any problems?
Second, Are you going to install a new alarm?
Third If the person who is going to install a new alarm system thinks it should be removed then listen to that person, He should have ebough mind to know.

Was the alarm a dealer-added OEM unit or an aftermarket one?

In either case, just disable it by removing the fuse and leave it in the car as a decoy and have the new unit installed in a well-hidden place with the wiring made to look like factory.

To put a final spin on this.....

If it is a TRUE oem alarm....the major tech departments and experienced
installers will know how to interface with these units. End of story. You will not have any interference problems between units if done properly. Now for those
who belive that the oem system will do fine...you are living in a dream world.
Anyone and I mean anyone can get the service info for your particular car..and guess whats listed in it...how to disarm that system. Heck some of the best shops and also crooks used to rent the hotest/popular cars to learn about them.

So there you have your answer.

Thanks for the replies. I was miss-using OEM. It's not original equipment. It's an Acura accessory. I think i'm going to leave it in and see if the alarms can be used together. What do you mean by "interface"? Somone else told me they could be used together. . If not, maybe leaving it in disabled could be a good decoy.
