Default Alarm Install

I have a viper responder 350 and wanted to know if i should attempt to install it myself or just have a shop do it for me? My car is sitting in my garage while I slowly replace the wheel bearings and plan on putting on new suspension. I like to do most of all my car maintenance and repairs myself and I build lots of computers. As for my soldering work I'm pretty much an amateur. So what do you guys think?

FWIW I did it and I've got 15 thumbs and no useful fingers. Brain's a bit befuddled too. Research as much as you can before you attempt it. Read up on all the various online install guides.

Beg borrow steal(or download ) the installation instructions for your particular alarm. The DEI Viper stuff seems to follow a standard of wiring colours so that's a help. EDIT here's a direct link to the above in PDF format. http://www.directeddealers.com/manua...008-12_web.pdf

Beg borrow steal a multimeter. You'll need one. Practice soldering(make sure it's acid free solder) before you get serious. It's not too difficult, but practice will really help when you're fiddling about soldering under the dash. PS put some sort of mat, protection under your soldering area in case you spill some and it gets burnt into your carpet. Don't ask me how I know.

IMHO removing your drivers seat is a major help. Gives you far more room to maneuver. The dash panels come out very easily in Tegs so you should have no problems there.

Take your time. Don't rush it and allow at least a day and more likely a weekend to do it.

Like I said I was able to do it and I had some screwups/bad planning while doing so. Mainly down to placement of the alarm brain. The Viper I have has three immobiliser/kill circuits not just a start kill, so the brain is a little larger than most, so the stealth place in WRX' first post won't work, then I tried suspendedhatch's behind the rear panel and it worked. However.. on JDM R's the full option delete models don't have any speakers behind the grill in the back so you can just stick your hand down and grab the alarm brain there. Not good. So I ended up moving my alarm and rejigging the wiring twice and it's now sorted. Luckily the same PITA alarm brain has two spare mux ports for extra sensors so that part was very easy.

TL;DR? research research research, practice, plan ahead and take your time and I reckon you'll get there. Good luck

Thanks for the input ****! I'll go about and install it myself then. I'll have plenty of time to work on it since I'm not in a rush.

I'll start working on my soldering techniques and gathering more info. I have a multimeter so I wont have to go through the trouble in getting one haha.

No worries KC. Glad I could help if even in a small way. Just take your time and just like life preparation is key. This coming from a bloke that when he wires a plug the house burns down...

Luckily for us, tegs, especially Type R's are brilliantly simple. One of the last truly raw electromechanical cars. No computer asking "why?" when you step hard on the loud pedal. Oh god is this so much full of win as a driver. ** Ooops :s was cross posting on another forum about Integras. But if you're driving a 90's Honda of any kind it still pretty much applies.

Once you take down the dashboard and have a long look you'll see that. It'll appear complex at first, but it really isn't so long as you do your reading and trace the wires. In fact what makes it easy for the human skidmarks on the jockeys of humanity to steal our cars also makes it easy for us to protect it.

I'd also suggest layers, like so many do. Alarm? Damn straight(if as a foreigner I may use an Americanism). Other physical layers are as welcome. TBH I prefer the physical layers in many ways, as they can take time to defeat. So if you can source one a cable type hood/bonnet lock is a great addition. Easy enough to install too. Or better yet, make up and weld in a bracket that allows you to attach a padlock to secure your hood. No matter what relocate the hood cable as it's daftly easy to open the hood on a teg from the outside(not just Tegs either and JDM Tegs are even easier). If the scum can't get under the bonnet, they're screwed. As it should be.

If you're one of those odd people who've gone full JDM and have the Recaros, then get a dirty great chain, loop it through the Recaro harness holes and through your steering wheel and lock it with a "**** off you mouthbreather"(tm) padlock, to really **** them off.

Another one is to stick a long shanked padlock through the knuckle of your steering column. Real headache for the scum.

If you're parked up fr the night, then swap around the leads to your distributer, also unplug a couple of the injector plugs, so even if the scum get that far the car will runn like a three legged donkey, if it runs at all.

Throw in a simple fuel/ignition kill on a separate hidden switch and they're in real trouble. Like I said check out Causeforalarm on that score.

While a detachable steeringwheel is not foolproof it's yet another and obvious layer. As is a hidden switch that kills the lights. Given scum usually target cars after dark, them not being able to turn on the lights makes them stand out and hopefully the cops in your neck of the woods jump on shít like that. Here in Ireland not so much, but I figure make it as hard as possible for the scum, so they scurry back to their burrows or go and lift an easier target.

Then you could add an anti hijack system in case the scum steal you keys. Clifford Blackjax is one, though I'm not sure you can get that where you are in the US? There are alternatives though.

After that you're into GPS trackers and they're getting cheaper by the month.

The thing is the old bullshít of "ahh sure if they really want it, they can have it" is fast becoming.. well bullshít with every passing day of us taking the steps to prove that BS wrong.

It's not that hard to install. I have personally installed that same alarm on several Hondas. However, if you don't know what you're doing, let a knowledgable person do the job for you. It's a totally different install compared to a headunit.

i was about to say to go to a shop to do it for you (i am going to do so) because its an alarm the most important components for thr security of your car. but when i read that you have a lot of time then start reading and let us know how it goes, if you have helpfull information that may change my mind to do it myself, let me know.

Honestly RS, if you have the time and the patience to read all you can on the oul interwebs, it isn't that difficult. It really isn't. Doing it as an actual job, where you are dealing with a myriad of different makes and models does require skill and experience and basically knowing what the **** you're doing, but if you have a decent amount of time, a fair grasp of your own car and a fair grasp of really basic stuff, this shít is not rocket science, especially when you have such Yoda's out there like wrx-killer-Sti-eater, FCM, Suspendedhatch and others on your fave search engine to guide you.
