Default 96 EK, New Sub.

i got a 96 ek and looking to get a subwoofer. I have been looking for a while and finally think im set on one. Im thinking of a single SA-12 D2 - Sundown Audio 12" 600W Dual 2-Ohm SA Series Subwoofer with a Hifonics Hfi1000d 1000 Watt RMS Mono Block Amplifier. Is this a good choice(amp)? Will the amp be able to properly power the sub?

what are you looking for in a sub?

SA series sound pretty good and get very loud in the right box.

Check out craigslist for some cheap stuff if you just want to start out.

Unless you're familiar with the brands and know what to look out for, craigslist can be a crap shoot. The sub is a GREAT choice. Power it with the right amp and you won't ever buy another system. The amp your looking at is just another china/korea made junker...imo. Specs are super over rated, it would never put out the power it claims unless it was on a bench maxed out running at 14+ volts constant with no distortion and pure power. Try to find an old Orion HCCA250R or something pre year 2000, when it was still USA made. Even a HCCA225 series g2-g4. Or look at an old school hifonics amp pre 2000. Orions are great because the HCCA series 2ch amps are stable below 1ohm mono'd. YES, i said stable below 1ohm! Has to be an older amp though, HCCA series. Crazy power, super clean sound. There is a ton of old school options if you do enough digging you'll find something sweet. If not something old school stick to a brand like Memphis Car Audio or something similar. Pay a little bit more but they are worth it.

Sonicelectronix has the amp your looking at from 499 down to 144! As a temporary thing for the price it would suit the bill, but once you find a nice old school amp and hook it up you'll hear the difference an old school "400" watt amp sounds like compared to new school 1000watt.

Throw it in a sealed box to close or built to spec (I believe this sub requires 1 cu ft but if you go up to 1.25 it might round out the sound a little better on the low end. If you like more "punch" than "boom" keep it closer to spec)
I have a single Orion XTR Pro (1999) and i have it in an angled box so it fires at the hatch glass, reflects really good and sounds amazing! You don't need anything more than a single 12" in that car. Match it against a good amp and you'll be able to hear your car from a few blocks away. Be prepared to get some roof vibrations and put a little dynamat behind the license plate.

if you want, PM me if your serious about getting a great sounding subwoofer.. my audio man builds custom subs using Kove Armageddon motors with various SA(Sundown Audio) parts to complete the sub, and of course a copper coil (most subs use aluminum coils and can't handle high wattage like a copper coil can), all you need to provide me is the RMS wattage your amp handles (being that your looking into a hifonics amp, they only rate their watts in RMS), and he can build you the perfect sub and box (box is made out of 3/4" MDF wood with the front mount being 1.5" or 2 3/4" pieces of wood)

I'll post pics of the 12" sub and box he built for me(i used to bump RE audio subs but his custom subs sound way better and cost way less) sub was 1600 watts RMS (dual 2 ohms) and my amp was a brutus hifonics 1600 watt RMS monoblock class D amp (Hifonics BXI1610D, as seen in the pic)
