Project SM2 Autocross S2000
Ok, so a couple of weeks ago, my F20 decided to say goodbye to me during an autocross, and spin a rod bearing. Its an unfortunate thing, but it gave me an excuse and an opportunity to begin preparing my car for something potentially greater... A shot at having an SM2 class racecar, and hopefully a trip to the SCCA Solo2 Nationals... Thats the idea and goal... we'll see if it gets there.... Nationals is only 2 months or so away (9/16/08), so getting there will be TIGHT schedule-wise if i decide to go... so actually making the event might be a stretch, but it's worth the shot.
Now accepting Corporate Sponsorships if anyone is interested in becoming a Marketing Partner of Panducky Racing hahaha! J/K (sorta)
So for now, this thread will sort of serve as a 'project thread' for this endeavor. In this thread you'll find the rebuild, and results of each modification, as well as some how-to's along the way. I'm pretty decent at documenting things i'm doing... if you want an example, check out the 'Project Ruckus Scooter' buildup HERE
The overall goal of this is to retain streetability, but build a car that could be competitive in SM/SM2... Throughout this process, the car will still be my daily driver in the end, so everything is being done around trying to keep it streetable, but fast. Should be a fun challenge.
The basic list of mods is an F22 motor swap, a custom turbo kit, different wheels and tires, and upgraded brakes... and a small wing.. lol! I have no idea if this will get it close to being SM2 capable on a Nationals level, but it'll be fun regardless.
So here is where we sit... after towing the car back to the shop, i took my wheels off the car, and threw back on the OEMs for the time being...
Its so sad to see this car like this every day...
I did start trying to figure out the decision process... air-to-air, or liquid-to-air... right now, liquid-to-air is winning out, which would mean that i'd be using that large barrel intercooler that is made by PWR. But if i don't, then the APEXi intercooler will be used...
Anyway, to the first order of business tonight... i picked up an F22C motor from a friend of mine, and he got it from a friend of his. THe motor was pulled because it had low oil pressure, and was beginning to knock at startup. The former owner of the motor decided to get a whole new shortblock (i think his insurance covered it or something)... but anyway, they didn't really dive into the motor to find out 'why'... the owner didn't want it anymore, and gave it to the guys at the shop, and they just pushed it under some stairs, cause you never know when you might need an F22 motor... lol!
So anyway, i went over on my Honda Ruckus scooter to pick it up... that was a journey in itself... haha! The shop was only 2 miles or so from my own, and i didn't want to wait for my friends truck to become available, and i figured that it would fit fine on my Ruckus... And it did
So, i got it back to the shop, and began the process of cleaning it up, and preparing it for teardown...
Heres the motor after a bit of cleaning (it was being stored in their bodyshop section, so it had about 1/4" of bondo dust all over it... lol!)
Then, it was time to start the operation... here it is in front of the teardown table... and its new home
From the outside, the motor looks great... the valvetrain is very clean, and the exhaust ports don't look like they have a lot of buildup at all...
SO, i began the teardown... first, i got the oil pan and the head off of the motor...
The motor looked good inside...
And the head was looking perfectly fine as well...
Took out a few more parts...
Then it was time for the biggie... time to drop the crank! So, the rods got removed, the girdle got unbolted, and i got my first look at what might be wrong...
And there it was... the #1 main bearing on the crank was spuuuuuuuun! THANKFULLY though, it looks like the owner caught it pretty good. The damage was very very minimal...
So, there it was... now i know what kind of damage i have to repair before putting the motor together... next stop is the machine shop and the Honda Parts Counter for some new bearings, rings, and stuff
So for now, all my parts are laid out, and ready for me to reassemble them!

Hahahah I lurk your build threads too much, but it's nice to have you guys here. However I don't sleep, except all during the day when I'm being a bum cause I don't have a job. Shouldn't you be sleeping? Geez you guys open in like 7 hours or something.

I say liquid-to-air, though it may weight a bit more. Better cooling and auto-x runs don't tend to be too long.
What size turbo is on there?

Ok guys... new plan that i think makes more sense both emotionally, physically, financially, mentally..... after having all day to think about it, i think my plan here needs more of a schedule, and getting an SM2 car built between now and Nationals is a bit ambitious indeed... it COULD be done, but after viewing available funds, testing/tuning time, and just lack of time in general, i think that the turbo part of it is going to be pushing it...
I'm still putting the car on the path to SM2 here, but the only way the car will be able to get to Nationals this year will be as a BSP car...
So for right now, on Ians suggestion, i'll be contacting CCW tomorrow for a set of wheels, working on getting the motor rebuilt and finished (it is at the machine shop right now actually), and getting the custom fender flares made.
So, i'll be looking at the BSP rules to see what i really can and cannot do to the car, and see if i can come up with something sorta competitive there... It'll still be quite an uphill battle, i'm sure... but it'll still be fun
For now, major components that this thread will focus on in the coming weeks will be:
-Motor Build
-Wheels
-Tires
-Fender Flares
-Clutch
-Exhaust?
-Custom Air Intake (ya, i'll FINALLY get rid of the OEM air filter)
-Computer/Tuning
-Tire Trailer Construction
Then the next stage, after this season is over and i am more accustomed to racing on actual race tires, then i will begin the transformation of the rest of the car to SM2...
Does that sound like a bit more of a "sane" plan? haha!

N/A is best! Hahaha.
And another set of wheels?! Jeez John, those CE's aren't good enough? Or are you getting race wheels? (You won't scoop up some lavender race tires, if they make them )

Re: (Infinityzer050)
dunno how much of that turbo power you'd be able to utilize on an autox course anyway. turbo lag. roasting tires. etc.
n/a all the way!
