Default oil burning issues

I've been having issues with my si since i got it eating oil. It burned bout 6 qrts or oil in 3 wks so yea i know i got some kind of issue. Did a compression test came back 180 across followed by a leakdown the other day 7% across. So yep compression rings are good and I can guess oil control rings because in theory they wear at the same rate 130k on motor. No smoke at start up only at high rpm that i can see at least running the factory CAT.

**Changed my pcv valve 7 days ago and have driven about 260 miles lost right at one qrt.

This is campared to last week i lost about 2 1/2 qrts. in 4 days. LOL

Just noticed there is oil seeping out of my headgasket right by the dizzy on the gasket part# stamping. No not valve cover or seals straight up gasket. I guess my next step is to replace the breather box on block and valve seals?

Any input or info will be helpful at this point im really stumped. I just cant believe it could create that much (blow-by preassure) in a sense to burn 2 gallons of oil......

I think this side of the forums has more critical thinkers in this aspect.

thanks

I am a service tech so yes i know how to do a comp and leak test correctly. < well depending on who you talk to on that one. And ive owned lotsohonda and this is the first one that i am just lost on. Ive seen a few instances of this on multiple forums but all to no end or answer at all. LETS FIGURE IT OUT!

I think this may answer the whole "All hondas burn oil (in vtec) thing too"

Possibly honda messed up calculating blow by and their pcv system?????

is this a b16 like in the 99-00 si's or a d16 like in the 92-95 si's. i was wondering cause i would think a b16 would blow more compresion than that. my bro's low compression b20 blew 185 on all cylinder's and that has 8.8-1 compression.i dont think there bad #'s as long as there consistant, just had me wondering.also oil control rings can gum up and go bad from lack of oil changes,etc...
also you may wana try venting the crankcase with the fittings on the back of the block. i think all honda's have alot of crankcase pressure

oil control rings or valve guides/seals.

cam seal and distributor o-ring couldn't hurt. but that really doesnt have much to do with your oil burning though.

I picked up some gsr cams so ill do valve seals at same time. I guess ill do the breather at the same time too just to eliminate it. Maybe pour seafoam on top of pistons and sit over night?
The original owner had not driven it for 3 months and the pistons look like they got a pile of carbon build up on em. We'll see i really dont want to tear it apart so ill eliminate all other possibilities first.

It def. smokes still at high rpm but not at start-up or decel so i guess that says oil rings.....

Oil control rings don't normally 'wear out'. They get stuck retracted in their ring lands due to carbon build up. This will not show up on a compression test. Based on how much oil your engine is consuming I would suspect the oil control rings because valve guides don't normally cause oil consumption of that magnitude. But since you're a mechanic you might just want to throw some seals at it and see what happens.

Are you just blowing smoke out like crazy? lol

You should try the seafoam thing and see if it works.

No smoke at all but high rpm like above 6k. Seafoamed it today 1/3 in the crank case and 1/3 through manifold. Ordered the seals they'll be in tomarrow straight from honda along with breather canister.

Ill update im probly just delaying the inevitable ring job we'll see thanks for the input guys.

tucker you are def. probly right

I really hope your not tho.....

Any other ideas on how to get rid of carbon build up on control rings? Soaking?

I read some gm recall on soaking their rings or something overnight i would imagine it would just drain right into crank case almost instantly/worth a try i guess.

if u don't mind it takes a while to "free up" the rings

you can give auto-rx a try

Auto-Rx® is made up of three ester groups.
