walrus noises while decelerating
i'm getting some type of noise while decelerating at slow speeds. the noise is definitly speed related. it sounds like a squeeky belt but I don't think thats what it is. it sounds like a walrus. 25k miles on my ITR w/ 2 seasons of scca. Maybe a wheel bearing? anyone?

It sounds like it is coming from the front drivers wheel/suspension area. I was hearing this noise before when making right turns, but then it went away for a while. now its back, only when decelerating at slow speeds.

Is it relative to weather? Is that why it went away and came back?

Not that I can think of, the weather has been pretty much the same over the past 2 months. 40 and rain. The only thing I can think of is that the sound has came back after removing my front/drivers side wheel to clean it, then putting it back on.

Pads are good, they were just replaced along with the Rotor's. I'll check the dust shield.

Ok, hands up everybody who has heard a walrus. I have absolutely no idea what a walrus sounds like.</TD></TR></TABLE>
its sounds like this... "aarrrf arrrrrf arrrrrf" and depending on the speed of the deceleration is how many rrrrrrrrrr's are in aarrrrrf.

How are the condition of the axles? If it's nothing silly like your dust shield, it could be your wheel bearing (like your guessing) and/or an axle.
I recently changed my wheel bearings and axles. But I always feel it's best to start with whats cheapest and use process of elimination until you find the problem when your unsure.

That just started my day. I can only imagine you sitting there in front of you computer "arrrfing" at the PC.
Anyway, I would check everything Brando has said. Also, do you have poly bushings?

A whale sounds nothing like a Walrus. Come on Opie you know better than that. This is basic marinbiology stuff.

Hrmmm...that sounds more like a Dog than a Walrus. I thought Walrusses sounded like a Seal. Aren't they basically the same thing?

Apparently not.
Walrus:

Seal:

That's a baby Seal. So it's cuter than the Walrus by far.

Does the noise go away if your driving and then turn the wheel from side to side. Distributing the weight from one side to the other. It could be a wheel bearing but it would make noise on accel and decel.

I'm putting the car on a rack this weekend to figure out where exactly this walrus is living. It's hard to pinpoint from inside the car.
