Default Track time?

what are some better way to track the time on a race track other than my buddy's stop-watch? How do you guys usually time yourself? Is there any not-so-expensive devices that can help tracking the time more accurate?

In autocross, there is a device that uses an accelerometer (sp) and a Palm Pilot to plot and take measurements. I am sorry, I don't have tons of info on this, but maybe check the back (classifieds section) of a Grassroots Magazine. I only saw this device once. email me @ cycldav@aol.com and I can track down the guy who has this device.
