Temp Sensor / Cluster Question
I recently put a USDM cluster from 2001 ITR in to my 1998 ITR chassis. Everything is working fine except for the temp gauge. It will never move off of cold even though the motor warms up. I'm also running a stock ITR ECU. If I drive the car with the motor warmed up, VTEC does engage. That would mean that the sensor is talking to the ECU, correct? Where exactly does the gauge cluster get the temp reading from? Any help would be great.
maybe the back of the board is different, green board that is, you can either swap the pins if its in wron location or.. find 98 cluster and swap all 4 gauges into it along with CF cover

He is right.
Is the same plug connector as the temp switch also. Make sure you don't have those two plugs mixed up...

Listen to this Brad. Just find a 97-98 LS cluster and swap the films.

Again, where exactly is the cluster getting the signal from? I guess I'll need to dig through the helms wiring diagrams. It does sound like a cluster problem because I would not get VTEC if the sensor had no reading, correct?

Does anyone know this for a fact?

The green film is def. different. I had a 01 JDM cluster in the GSR for a while and I needed to swap the films (and the icon films) to get everything to work and light up properly. Many people look for another R cluster to play with but infact a cheap ol' GS automatic cluster will fit the bill.

Brad i had a very similar problem to this. The plug below the distributor was just loose. I wasn't getting any temp reading but still had vtec. i pushed that plug in and i got a temp reading.

The Thermo Unit (Item#10) controls the guage on the cluster. P/N: 37750-PH2-014
The ECT Sensor or Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor or TW Sensor (Item#12) is used by the ECU to read coolant temperatures. (Located directly behind the Thermo Unit and should have a two wire plug) P/N: 37870-PJ7-003
The Thermo Switch (Item#11) is used to switch on the Radiator Fan. P/N: 37760-P00-004

No. The Thermo Unit is a one way unit that runs directly to the Temperature Meter in the cluster. The ECU does not read off of this.
