Suspension Setup
Has anyone tried Ground Control coilovers with KYB AGX shocks on their R? I want to lower the car but not ruin the handling or ride feel of the car? Will this setup work for what I want?
Why would you even think of putting KYB AGX shocks on an ITR? The stock Showas are so much better. I don't believe you can lower the car without ruining the handling or feel of the car without VERY VERY careful suspension tuning. The ITR came VERY well balanced and tuned. If you want to change suspension, you'll have to go with something pretty good to improve upon it...
i think the bilstein specific R shocks and ground control setup is very good. this is personally what i want, if i don't shell out 1000 bucks for some j-spec coilovers first.
big phat r, is running this setup with custom ERS, eibach race springs, and he really likes it. hth.

I did a little research on these Bilstein shocks and it seems like a lot of people are using them and like them. So how would Ground Control coilovers with Bilstein ITR specific shocks sound? Would this setup work well for me?

If you don't have the $$ for real coilover, I would just get the TEIN NA and be happy ever after!
Unless you can go corner weight your car and you really take you car to race, you don't really need a coilover. I have the NA and put it to the highest C ring setting, and it lower around 1.2-1.5" both front and back, look really nice!
The ride quality is very good too, soft and comfortable on the street, but it will stiff up during corner!! And the softest setting on the shock is just like stock and when you on the stiffest setting, it is very stiff!!

I've cot the Bilstein/GC combo, and I think you'll be better off with the Mugen low-down kit and their rear bar (seriously).
The Bilsteins are NOT adjuster dampers, and you'll have to do some guessing for spring rates (nobody seems to run the same springs). Whereas, the Mugen shocks are made to lower the car about .75 inch, they are adjustable dampers, the rear bar will help with the rear (help eliminate understeer) and it's all plug and play.
BTW -- your car looks good with the new front end (saw your post a while back), and tell your dad I said "hello". /Ed Pipala

ed, have you cut your bumptstops yet?
i'm running a GC/koni yellow setup (running the '88 crx rears). the konis are adjustable, and MUCH better than KYB's.
i like my setup, and think that the GC's are pretty underrated (flames welcome...). but i want to try the r-specific bilsteins, just to see what they feel like with the GC's.
my $0.02.

chris, i dont have any setup right now, its just stock. thing is, i want the gc/bilstein combo. when i had my eibach springs on stock shocks, it freakin sucked. thats my only experience with suspension so...
pete, yeah, i had to cut the bumpstops when i installed the eibach springs, so they're cut right now on the stock sus.

If I were going to mess with the suspension(which I never would), I would copy realtimes setup. Not sure if its lower, but they use eiback springs and mugen double-adjustable shocks
Ed: What about the setup you have now don't you like? I know the Mugen setup is better, but also more expensive.
Suspen set-ups tend to be personal choices, eventually a trade-off between comfort and performance.
I'm sure the Bilstein/GC combo would be fine for the average Joe for a daily driver, but it's a stop-gap compromise IMO.
There's no damping adjustment (which I believe the low-downs have), there's no shock-integrated upper spring support (since the GC sleeve and perch only provide a lower spring seat), and there's still the spring choice issue. Not to mention that the shocks and sleeve kit will already run you about $950-1k anyway!! Spend the extra 4-500 on the good ****, and maybe get the Mugen USTBs as well.
If you just want to lower the car in the mean time I'll send you my Eibach (sportline?, were supposed to be H&R) springs for the cost of shipping (I'm trying to get rid of as much stuff that's just lying around as possible, lately).
Keep it shiny side up.
/edP.S. - Frankly, I liked those springs and didn't mean to change them (stock bump-stops), but my mechanic said he was having some difficulty installing them with the Bilsteins, so I ended up with the GC sleeve kit!!
Yellow Blur -- If you still want a Bilstein/GC combo then make me an offer, I've got 2 sets of spare springs as well (and then I'll get a low-down set up, too).

haha, im pretty sure itll be a great setup, and you can customize spring rates from groundcontrol.
