Even so, the best insurance is just GOOD INSURANCE. A professional thief will still be able to steal your car unless your garage is a gigantic steel vault. *shrug* I did a lot of thinking about different kinds of security stuff when I first got my R, and I decided I wasn't even going to worry about it, whenever I add stuff to my car I call my insurance agent and get it put on the policy. Essentially if my car gets stolen I'm out $100, which isn't too damn bad. That is a lot better than jimmying up 30 minutes worth of different anti-theft devices every time you park your car in my opinion.

i've got a clifford.

i don't know the model, but it's a real pain in the ***; in a secure way though, plus the siren is nauseating...

so i have that going for me... which is nice.

vipor 790xv. it pages you and it has remote start but if you hook that up you either have to have a neutral safety switch or just trust yourself not to leave it in gear or you will run it into a wall or car... other that that if i am leaving it outside i just take my steering wheel off.

The best security it a multi-tiered approach, therefore, a thief will have to compromise multiple different walls before being successful.

1.Alarm (if you can afford it, GPS Tracking)
2.Autolock (new version is better the old unit)
3.Club
4.RS Door Handle Mod
5.Cover your VIN (I use a business card size piece of black cardboard)
6.Kill Switch (Hide it well & dont tell any of your friends the location – people talk)
7.Remove distributor wire (This may seem a tad bit excessive, but it works)

All these steps may seem like a nuisance and a bother, and to be honest some times they are…. It takes me, 10 minutes to park my R when I bring it out… but if followed, you should be able to keep the car… come May I will have had my R for three years…. (Knock Wood)

However, if someone really wants the car, they will take it…. Which brings me to another thief deterrent… Be smart. Be aware. Be careful where you park it. Keep an eye out for people tailing you at night, looking to see where you live….

FYI -- Should you guys really be posting what security you have installed???

I agree with the post above, just get good insurance. Theres nothing you can do to protect your car. People have posted here that had custom GPS systems that interfaced in with their home computers, and they still never saw their car again. People have had the car stolen out of their garage, and have had cars behind their car moved out of the way, etc. Just get good insurance.

I agree. My car was stolen from a 'secure' parking lot with cameras and guards. It took 4 mins for them to take it(read:drive away), and i'm sure most of that was them bypassing the immobolizer. I once had that attitude that if they want it, they'll get it; security was not a huge concern of mine.

Regarding a kickass alarm, a friends R who was stripped had a very good clifford, and not a single beep. It's mind boggling, and very frustrating. Due to numerous layers of security the car was not stolen, that sure says something to me. Next time around I will not be as naive, and will have multiple layers.

Regarding the security 'tricks', they should be kept to a minimum. Not that I don't love to discuss new, trick ideas, but offline is best. Posting this kind of info on a highly-viewed board such as this should be thought out before doing so. We're not just driving normal cars, many of us were targeted and watched. I may be a bit conservative here, but mine was stolen a week ago; and not a single word.
