remote start?
Tried searching, but the search button didn't come up with desirable results...Does any R's on this forum have remote start on their car? worth it?

I know it can be done, but they wont do it at shops because of liability. If you have it in gear and start it, it will jump and could hit something. I think if you don't leave it in gear it would be nice in the summer or winter to have your heater going or a/c.
I just had a friend the other day remote start his em1 in gear and had to chase after it to stop it! it literally came 1 foot away from hitting a mustang and curb!!! Def not worth it IMO...even tho it can come in handy!
it's great in the winter as well if you wanna warm up your car.
i've got a paging Compustar alarm. Shop installed, then had another installer friend do the auto-start on the side since shops won't do auto-start on manual cars (jdmeg6b18b's right about liability).
the way the autostart works is:
-car is running in neutral
-parking brake is up (make sure your brake holds btw!)
-turn off the ignition and pull the key out
-the car will still be running while the key is out
-get out and close the door
-once the door closes, the car will shut off and arm itself because now it knows you're in neutral
-ready for autostart
Once your car has autostarted, it is still armed until you disarm it and put the key into the ignition (has an anti-grind feature as well so if you crank it by accident, you wont' grind your starter).
if you don't put the key into the ignition and turn it to the on-position, the car will shut off when you step on the brake. it will also shut off if the alarm is triggered while the key is not in the ignition.
hope that helps!

You can actually do it with a manual transmission by using something like the DEI 689M Neutral Safety Module. I don't know much beyond that.
Having a remote start means you cannot have secondary kill switches that are not controlled by the alarm. Or if you do, you can't use them when you want to remote start your car.

I install compustars on the side and they are very safe with the 5 speed model. I have one on my own car and I use it alot. They are fool proof. wont start unless set as stated above.
I have remote start on mine and as stated below it doesn't come into play unless you go through a certain sequence.
Brake down, e-brake up, brake up.
Only thing that can go wrong is if you arm the autostart but have your windows open someone can put it into gear and when you remote start it will potentially hit something.

I wouldn't suggest a remote start for security/theft reasons. It becomes even easier to steal with remote start added not too mention one of your valet keys would be hidden in the dash for the immobilizer override.
Just bought my R, had a 2 way remote start, The FIRST thing i did was disable the remote start and get the KEY out of that car.
Then again i do live in beautiful 75 degree SoCal so maybe i just dont understand the need.

The Viper 5701 is a perfect system for the type r if your looking for remote start. I've had several people have them installed on their manual cars and it works great. DEI has developed a way for the car to start without the car running away from you.
