Default OTish: platform sharing

*hope this isn't too off topic to upset anyone*

being new to honda, i'm curious about platform sharing.

up until this point i have been a german car fan... i still am, but the reason i got an itr is because it so closely resembles a modern day e30 m3 (car of my dreams) without all the maintainance issues.

we all know how temperamental german automobiles can be.

anyway... i was into veedubs for a long time, and i can tell you all about platform sharing when it comes to dubs, such as: corrados are based on the mkii golf/jetta. golf's and jetta's are of course on the same platform (A-chassis). the passat and the audi a4 share a platform (B-chassis)... etc.

so what is the deal with honda? the DC-2 chassis... is it shared with any other honda vehicles? how about preludes, is the prelude chassis shared with any other honda? way off topic, i know, but i'm curious.

any other info to fill my trivia hungry brain is appreciated.

thanks.

I'm about 99.9999999% sure that the civic and integra do not have the same chassis.

I'd like to know about the undecided .0000001% !!!! How about this: the civic and the integra unibody do share similar stampings, such as seat rails, engine bay mounts, firewall similarities, and other stampings. However, I'd say they are identical twins not faternal. Meaning: while the share a common wheelbase (the DC2 and EG) other common dimensions..... once you get to know them there are a lot of subtle differences. However there is enough similarities to do tons of fun part swapping!!

uh... isn't it the other way around? (had to correct the spelling error... i'm a nerd)

so the civic/integra is like the golf/jetta... basically the same, with minor variations that can lead to some clever part swapping? ever seen a jetta with a golf front end or the other way around? it's kinda cool... for show not go.

not that anyone would put a civic front end on an integra or vice versa... well, maybe. i'm new here, so i wouldn't know.

You're into VWs right? Well think of this, the Integra and the Civic is more like the Passat and the Audi A4. They share the same "PLATFORM", which is the basic dimentions and underpinnings. The Golf and the Jetta comparison is more like a Civic Sedan to a Civic Hatchback.

so what is the deal with honda?
All car manufactures do it. Otherwise they can't afford to make many different cars.

Actually, I'm confused. What does it mean to say they share the same platform? That the parts will be interchangable right? But a civic door wont fit an integra will it? I know the engines will swap, but a corvette engine will also fit into a camaro... Noone would say they share a platform.

So what defines 'sharing a platform'?

The Prelude has (had) its own platform. It does not share a platform with any other Honda product. The costs associated with maintaining a separate platform for it was a big reason it was discontinued.

So what defines 'sharing a platform'?
Things like shared floorpan design (but not neccessarily wheelbase), shared suspension components and geometry, shared engine and transmission mounting points, ...

civics and integras, mainly dc's and eg's are pretty interchangeable. Just about everything from an integra, can be put on a civic, short of the body. There was a guy on here who totalled his type r, and put everything, from the dashboard, to the rear seats, to suspension, wheels, brakes, brake cylinders, motor, tranny, center console, front seats in an eg (92-95) civic. This is also why so many integra owners are scared of theft, and hostile towards civic owners with motor swaps ( i used to have an integra, than had a civic hybrid).

Got any pics of your old veedub?

now that was informative. thank you.

no... unfortunately no pics of the dubs. but i can make a list:

mki rabbit gti. the exhaust set off car alarms, but in a good way. it had such a low rumble. handled like a go cart. it was rad. was planning an aba 2L bottom end swap, but the car was totalled.
mkii jetta gli. built 2L. dohc. all the goodies. i still miss that car. with the cam and garrett chip, it revved to 7800... i used to stomp on many a honda. not bad for a ten year old car, but reliability on those twin cam motors was less than desireable. car got rear ended.
mkiv jetta. bottomline... this car sucked. got rid of it.

*edit: realized i was getting way off topic.

Well yeah, I can see the resemblance there. But what about something like the honda cr-v and a civic. Besise the lights, they are pretty different. Yet they supposedly share the same platform.

As a kid that came from the VW's to the Honda's because the ITR is a modern A2 GTi in my mind I can see why you bought the ITR.

Welcome and enjoy your new found freedom...on the rev counter that is!!

Sorry about this being off topic of the post, but yeah, the integra is the same base as the civics, just the bodies are different. Think Rabbit and Scirocco.

Yes, the CR-V and the Civic look diffrent but so does my example, the Audi A4 and the VW Passat. Its just the frame of the car sorta. The thing you would see if you stripped of all of the panels off and was left with nothing but the bottom. Even that could be lengthened and shortened so that it could conform to various tasks.

Now if you take a CR-V and lower it and the roof line, you have yourself a Civic.(VERY CRUDE EXAMPLE)

Shorten the Oddessy and make it into a sedan and you got yourself a USDM Accord. (AGAIN, A VERY CRUDE EXAMPLE)
