Once it has been torqued, I would not re-use it.

at this point you might as well just tie it to a rope and drag it behind the civic

Don't re-use the gasket IMO. Some people may have gotten "lucky" but as mentioned once torqued... get rid of it. Would you really want to risk it after what already is going on?

As for the head... clean up the chambers and such. Pour some oil in it and see if it leaks from the valves.

Headgasket is garbage.

Who installed the cylinder head? If it was them, they are liable. If you installed the cylinder head they performed work on, you might be out of luck.

Make sure you do a valve adjustment when you are done. You dont want any valves hanging open which will give you no compression.

I even de-adjusted the valves to make sure they were closed

if the timing belt was off a tooth or so, you probably would not be able to build compression either...

you should be able to turn the engine over manually and watch the valves open and close...so unless there are valves that are stuck OPEN (while the head is just sitting on your table) i dont really think there is a problem with the head.

this is initially what I thought but he told me everything was at TDC. i would flip that head over, clean it, and do the oil or water test to see if the valves leak.

well it looks like you did a leak down test...but did you do a compression test to see what type of compression it would build?

cylinder leakage is a pain in the *** to test...

you need 2 people, someone to hold and read the gauge and then someone to turn/hold the crank pulley. a lot of times (depending on how much pressure you are using) the air will actually be able to rotate the crank assembly, so if you arent holding the pulley with a wrench, the air will all leak out. furthermore, what you THINK is TDC (going by the markings on the cams) might not actually be TDC, so sometimes you need to turn the crank slightly to fully SEAL the chamber. you will notice that as you turn the crank it will become increasingly hard to hold the wrench because the pressure will be built up so much...that is when you get your accurate reading of the leakage.

did every cylinder yield the same results?

what were the compression numbers?

this whole thing just seems really strange to me...

when the head is off the engine, the valves are all closed...meaning that the valve springs are working just fine. if the valves were not seated properly, you would be able to see that. there isnt much else that could be messed up in the head...

you would be able to see the cams turning and rocker arms functioning when cranking the engine (if the valve cover is off...so what else is there?
