help?
well i went to go look at a type r this morning.
2000 black r with 38k miles, hes asking 15,700 for it but he said it was rebuilt and he is the 2nd owner. he said the original owner got hit in the quarter panel.
i ran a carfax on it and it said estimated 4 owners(hmm) and the car came from the east coast but its in WA now.
what you guys think of the deal?
theres also another one at a dealership with a clean title and original owner with 38k miles 2001 R and still under warranty, and the car is getting a tune up with basically new clutch, and some other stuff. but hes asking 21k for it, think i can talk it down to how much?

Hard to tell without seeing the car in person.....Open the rear hatch lift up carpet and spart tire cover and look for overspray, buckling of the metal, cutting, spot welds, anything that would look out of the ordinary, compare it to the other side, etc etc. Just might be some indication that is was hit damn hard. My gsr was hit in the left rear but only panel damage, no inner body damage, I still bought it.
I bought my car as a theft recovery (still has a clean title though) that had a replaced front bumper and fender and I've been happy with it, it all comes down to what you're willing to pay for, and what you're willing to live with.
Are you saying that the car hass a theft recovery/salvage title?
If so, $12k would be more realistic.
ITRs are not that rare - wait for one that you are happy with. Four owners sounds odd - people tend to keep these cars for years before selling.

It doesn't sound right. When carfax estimates there were 4 owners, there are probably 4 owners or more. When you look at carfax, it should tell you the transactions of where and when the title of the car has changed.

Carfax indicates whenever a new title is issued. However, titles are sometimes issued without ownership changing - for example, when the owner moves and files a change of address to receive a new title.
That being said, if I were considering buying a rebuilt ITR, I would have it taken to the best body shop in the area and paying them for a pre-purchase inspection. Paying for an hour or two of labor would be worth every penny - they will be able to tell you whether it was fixed up right, stuff you would never know to look for without their experience.
As for the 2001, based on your description, it's probably worth $19-20K. Which is not far off from their asking price. As for how far you can talk them down, that depends on a lot of things - like how eager they are to sell, how much interest they've seen in it, etc.
P.S. When you start a topic on h-t.com (or any other board), please put a more descriptive title on it, so people know what it's about. "help?" doesn't tell anyone anything about what you're asking about.

You would have to ask the place who would be doing it.
When you take your car to a regular dealer service department, they typically take 1-2 hours and charge their standard rate of $75-100/hour. (Which is why .RJ's estimate sounds like a good one to me.)
Given that you would want to take it to a body shop expert, I don't know how long they would take or how their rates would compare with a dealer service department.
