FIELDS VTEC CONTROLLER
Like the topic says, has anyone ever used this controller on a chipped p28 ECU??
Thinking of upgrading to skunk 2 stage 2 cams, gears, and a port and polish, and wondering on this unit. Yay or Nay??? My tuner (Will and Eric from point zero in waterloo), says this is optimal to use in my application. Dont really want to go to a hondata or a ems unless I have to!! Anyone play with this beast and how did you like it, or NOT!!!!
Thanks again my fellow H-T friends!

I have used my Field's for the past 4 years with a Kenji re-progged P28. first on my B16 and now on my ITR engine. No compatibility issues whatsoever. Just make sure that the VTEC x-over on the Field's matches that of the re-progged ECU.
My engine is stock right now, I merely use the Field's for fuel tuning. And it I must say it does the job for me.

Thanks for the relply, and the dyno to show the gains also!! I have read that the fields is not very reliable (breaks a lot) is this true?? I also heard its tepurature sensitive, as too hot it malfutions as well as too cold, any info on this? My tuner wants me to put a fields instead of a apexi, and would love to go this route if you guys give me some good feedback!!
Thanks again all!!!
Thanks again all!!!

I have NEVER had a single hiccup from mine. It is mounted on top of the steering column in full view of the Florida sun. Right now it is in the 40's, no problems. It just needs some air around it to allow circulation.

You'll see some stuff with me fuel tuning with the Fields. I've never had a problem with it. However, I'd spend the money on a Hondata if this hadn't come already on the kaa when I bought it. I don't like only being able to adjust fuel at the 1000rpm increments.
Hondata is gooooooooooood.
btw - I do NOT have a kenji special. I'm running the stock ecu. Mods are listed on the page above.

To avoid conflicts. Granted the Field's is supposed to override the ECU for certain parameters, but there is the possibility of a conflict. Ex. Your ECU is set for 5600 and the Field's is set for 5000, there might be a problem. Some stuttering perhaps. However I do not have any proof of this, just something that was passed on to me when I bought the Field's. So, take it with a grain of salt if you wish. I haven't experimented and have no plans to.
My ECU was programmed by Kenji, afterwards I bough the Field's and made him aware of it. He provided me with some basic fuel adjustments. Whether the instructions to match the x-over came from him or somebody else, I can't recall.

I used to have a fields controller, it worked fine for me, but i know it dosen't have all the features that a VAFC has.
I have heard of field controllers malfunctioning, my friend used to run one and we suspected it was the reason his ECU was reading messed up map sensor signals. I would go with the VAFC, more user friendly and more new.

I'll 'negatory' that call - I've seen considerably more problems with the VAFC...but then again, maybe it's because there are so many more of them :-P
**burp - Hondata rocks - grabs tummy - "excuse me"**

I thinks im going with the fields unit, but some people said that the apexi VAFC may be better!!?? Why does my tuner (he is awesome) want me to go the Fields route> He also said the Fields is easier to tune with (K.I.S.S) because the apexi just has "junk" you dont really need!! STILL NOT SURE here boys, but leaning to the Fields like Will sudjested

Don't believe everything you hear. I have a Field unit and I can move the VTEC point to wherever I want, and it acts just like it should all the time.
The unit is perfectly reliable, it's been in my car on some hot sunny days in florida, and works great when it's below freezing both in NC and Baltimore, MD. It's really simple, just 3 buttons. I think it's for people who want their electronics to perform, not just look like they do. There's no flashy readouts of sensors, for better or worse, just speed and RPM. My only complaint, and I'm sure everyone can say this, is that the display is unusable in direct sunlight, the whole display goes white. But other than that, I love it. The shift beep is pretty nice too especially at the track.

I have had mine for over six years with no problems. It does look dated but is easy to use and set up. The only problems that I can remember people having was with the instructions not being translated into english.
Thanks again Fields is what im goin with, hopin for 20-? at the wheels in the spring at the dyno!! shouldnt be too hard with the setup I got maybe even 21-?. Well wish me luck on the numbers, and hope for the best!! Thanks again all coulnt do this sheat without my H-T poeple backing me 110%!!!!!!!
Funny you should say Hondata, I asked my tuner about this and he said it was not really needed in my application, and might be hard for myself to diagnose and fix if a problem occurs. I live in Sudbury ON. where slowbras, and pickups rule!! LOL.
If I ever had a problem im 4 hours away from anyone that could help me out! Little scared about a full stand alone system, at least with a controller worst case I can still run on my chipped P28 and limp it to someone that has a clue how to "tune" ECU's.
Im not a pro when it comes to the ECU side of a honda, so Im kind of going with what my tuner says, because he has never let me down, BUT im always looking for the other side of things and have not yet ruled out Hondata!!
