Default Cracked engine block...a DIY tutorial :P

Some of you know the story on this already, but I'm curious if anyone can figure out what happened judging by the pictures (or have seen this before)?

And yes, that's my block...

Did you bottom out the bolt that was going into it? I could imagine someone running too long a bolt causing it to bottom out then shearing off the material.

As for what happened...

Previous owner apparently opened up the bottom end (not sure why, never knew about any of this) and loctited that particular bolt for some reason. Over time, the bolt had started to back out, and thus, the crack is there.

The piece did not fall out until after I pulled the crank out the other night...

Also note, that there was some interest in this block. However, once they see this pictures...I don't know if there will be anymore. I'm making plans for a nice endtable

So, the crank would move slightly as it wasn't bolted down properly at that end. Oil would squirt out, etc.

Lucky it didn't break off, I'd think the piston would have slapped the head or the rod would have gone through the block, or something disastrous.

So why the hell did someone locktite it? Did that start the crack? or wtf?

Surprisingly, the crank was really held on tight...which is probably why it's condition is still good (thankfully).

I still wonder what the previous owner was doing in there though....

It was still cracked. It's pretty weird. Maybe I'm just super lucky...and yet, not at the same time?

I'm a complete n00b when it comes to assembling engines, so excuse the stupidity, but why does Locktite'ing the bolt cause it to back out?

When bolts are torqued, the torque spec is a calculation based on bolt stretch. If the hole can't get rid of what's in it (air, oil), it hydraulics (develops pressure in the bottom of the hole), the result being that the bolt feels torqued, a torque wrench can say that it is torqued but it isn't. Loctite weakens when hot so it doesn't really do anything any more...

Snap-ola. Sorry to see it but yeah, it'll make a really cool coffee table.

I still wonder why it was loctited in the first place. I should look at it closer and see if the threads were stripped...or maybe he cracked it beforehand, band-aided back together, and sold it to me...hmm.

It last 70k miles, and still ran at that point, but once this was discovered...obviously didn't get put back together like that.
