A Burning Question.....
I searched here and noticed a trend with all the Burning Oil complaints.
Almost all of the folks had recently switched to Synthetic Oil.
I just did too, Mobil 1 Stnthetic. Now after about a month I am down 3 QUARTS
I "fell" out of VTEC the other day and went straight to the store for oil. I added a quart and still could not see any on the stick
I added another today and now it is barely above the bottom hole. The back of my car is got black crud all over it....
Should I be worried???????
Thanks

So that's what all that stuff is all over my CW 97!
worried -- check compression and leak down
still think you'll be lapping the rest of us (yeah, I know it's not funny). ed

hmmm.....
I burned 1/2 quart this past weekend at TGP... Hardest the car has ever been run... I kind of expected it, though - it just make sense that the oil gets vaporized after 20 minutes of vtec...
Side note and interesting fact:
The 3rd gen rx7's are notorious for burning oil - it is the nature of the wankel. For this reason, mazda forbids you use synthetic.
Food for thought?

Hey my car burned through a whole crankcase full of Motul 6100 Synthetic.... what's going on here?? My mechanic thinks that some of the oil is slipping by the rings and vapourizing at high rpm....Hmmmm. Just wondering what the experience of those running really HIGH compression motors is....?
I'm switching to Motul 300V Synthetic and a Spoon baffled oil pan. The 300V is what they use at LeMans - so temperature stability should be the best.
Phat R - who doesn't like it when the "check oil" light comes on - DOH!

i've a friend with one of the recent 7s, ... and the reason they forbid the use of synthetic is because it fouls the cat more than dino oil.
One of the reasons Rs "burn" oil may also have to do with the oil squirters (at least the pistons don't melt).
plus -- I suppose a little gets by @ 8500 rpm (not to mention fully lifting off the throttle at that speed)!

Chris -- what kind of driving conditions?
Mobil 1 is definately better than some type of conventional oil.
Last question, what weight oil? 0-30, 5-30 ...
Hope things are oK (I want to run you down on the track fair and square)
another Q, did you notice a funny smell when the car was standing still (almost like a faint ....)

I picked up 5W30. I havent had this problem until now.
With what Acura used it would last 3000 miles with a track day in there too.
I was at an AutoX with the JDM header and testpipe and all 3 R's out there were puffing white smoke, so I thought it was normal.
I admit I have been driving hard lately (since I got the header) and I DO notice at high RPM and into 3RD gear there is that oil smell and a little haze behind me....
NO SMELL parked
I would LOVE for you to beat me fair...THIS IS why I cant wait to go...so I can get a good critique from HT members

actully why the 3rd gen rx7 s arent permitted to use synthetics are because one manufacturer's synthetic oil didnt perform well and instead of facing a lawsuit by naming that one brand...they just said dont use synthetic at all but for the most part...if your gonna be driving hard...use synthetic because it lasts a bit longer and protects better...i forget which brand is the best but mobil one should do it for you unless you take it to the limit for more than 20- 30 min at a time
In and of itself, burning "some" oil under these conditions seems to be simply what happens.
I've also found myself low once in a while if I don't check it now and then (particularly after some nice long highway runs).
Stick with the Mobile 1 (in my opinion), maybe something thicher if you feel you need to (and sacrifice a HP or two).
P.S. I'm switching to a test pipe just to save my cat for emissions time! ed

When I switched to Synthetic(Mobil 1) at 1500 miles, I also switched to 10W-30. I'm in North Carolina, and haven't burned any more than the occasional 1/4 of a quart every couple months, or if I take it to the track I burn about 1/4 of a quart in a weekend.. no more than expected I'd say. Just my $.02
I use Mobil1 10W30 and do not experience even one drop of oil loss in between my 5K mile oil changes.
Kelly uses Mobil1 5w30 and his car uses up oil all the time.
Is it coincedence that 10W30 doesn't burn off? hrm/ness
yoshi - who just did an oil change last week

to answer Yoshi's Q, that might be the difference ... though I don't think that completely explains it.
A friend of mine drives like a Grandma (maybe slower, shifts @ 2.5-3K in his 91 Q Coupe), and doesn't use any oil (Mobil 1 15-50)!
Add it all up, and us roughnecks will just burn that 5-30 when shifting @ redline (or above)!
Plus, his comes out clean after 7-10K miles, and mine is dirty after 1.0 - 1.5 K (see, I ve learned to keep checking the oil)!

I switched both of our R's at 1500 miles and have never noticed a problem burning oil. I've always put in Mobil 1 10W-30. I know what the owner's manual says, but I just think 5W-30 is too thin for our cars. I'm quite **** about inspecting the cars every couple of days, and I've never noticed a problem on either one losing any. Hmmm...
dude its ok..... oil consumption on R's is relative to how you broke your car in, if you gunned it from the start you should expect the motor to take abit of oil throughout its life....
i just recently topped up about 1 litre of Mobil1 10w30. BTW how many litres is 1 quart?

Try driving consistently shifting at redline for about 2-3 hours. You should see a difference in oil level.
Phat R - who drives his car for 2-3 hours shifting at redline (9300) Woo hoo!

Chris I had the same problem the Mobil 1 5W30 seems to be very thin, try the 10W30, I did notice the problem wasnt as great when i switched back to regular mobil oil.
