Default Adding a capacitor

http://www.carstereoworld.com/Images...ord/cpc10b.jpg - these thing are usually seen in large audio setups - subs/amps/stuff liek that.

But would it serve a purpose without the audio system?

Any thoughts?

Found some description for Capacitor:

"Electric devices that store a charge. Capacitors are similar to batteries in that they store an electric charge for later use. They are made of two conducting plates (metals) separated by a thin insulator (non-conductive material). A capacitor's storage is measured in Coulombs, which is based on the capacitance of the device (its ability to hold a charge) multiplied by voltage imposed on it. "

If you get some high amperage ones you could make a nifty rail gun

I'm still trying to figure out why you'd want a capacitor when it's not needed..

Come on Dave you know how much you want that triple chrome plated capacitor with neon covered wires under that clean hood of yours.

Its not needed as much as earthing system would be, I seen a pic of car with audio system in the back, so made me think if capacitor would serve a purpose without the system, improve things or not.

Yea but do you know why? Because you can start the run to 88MPH and hit 88 right before you cross the line. Have the time circuts set to a split second before you started the race and you cross the finish line a split second after you start

that damn flux capacitor, i got one of these, took about 2 seconds of my 1/4 mile..

lets keep this technical. A capacitor might serve more benefit to people with more modifications, electornics, or even aftermarket lights.

if anyone has any useful input - topic related.. please reply

searched around.. found this http://www.motorsportsdigest.com/install-msd1.htm -

"Here's the part you may have heard of, but never paid much attention to. Adding a capacitor when installing an MSD offers several advantages and is very benificial to a long lasting ignition. MSD calls it a "Noise Filter," but it is simply just a cap. Typically, these are used to help filter out any radiated noise from the ignition to your electrical system which can cause some radiated noise through your stereo. For most of us this won't be a problem. The important thing is that this cap also filters the power going to the MSD. This will prevent power surges and spikes from damaging the MSD. Things like jump-starting your car are very tough on sensitive parts, but using a cap will provide the protection you need."

MSD is talking about small cap, not one of thouse big ones they use for car stereos. Like thouse little ones you used to solder onto your remote control car motor so the radio didn't *** up and make your car on an adventure of its own.

I actually considered using one as a back up battery for my alarm, it doesn't wiegh that much. I have a 1.2 farad cap from back back in the stereo days. I try to sell it ocasionally but its still in the garage.

a capacitor will not act as a backup device....

basically, when adding a cap and running the car, the cap stores a charge and when your amps require a fast, high amount of current (such as in deep bass) the capacitor will provide / ease the load on your alternator.

This will stop headlights from dimming simply because your alternator is not trying to strain to give your amp the power it wants to produce the low frequency its trying to reproduce at that time (such as a big thump in a song...) By adding the cap, your allowing your amp to have the power when it wants it.

Capacitors are also used in a hella lot of other places, including filtering of signals (such as that of your tweeter) etc..but these are extremly small in comparison to the .5 and 1 farad models your talking about.

A cap is only required for instantaneous high current draw, what's in your car that would require this?

Exactally. If you add a subwoofer box, you might see a differnece in the bass hitting harder with these. Thats about it though.

i don't think theres anything in my car that requires this, i just thought it might work in similar matter an earthing system would. only things i have added is larger injectors, hondata, advanced timing..
