When to replace distributor?

When to replace distributor?

Is the distributor something that is to be replaced at intervals, or just when it fails? TIA I'm trying to make a list of things to do for my 30k maintenance...

umm, its like 500-700 dollars at http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.net/ very expensive

ok thanks, I think I wanted to refer to just the rotor and cap ?

I replaced just the distributor base, and ignition module (what acura calls it) and it was like $190 from the dealer, worked like a charm.
