When to do valve adjustment??

When to do valve adjustment??
How do you tell if your engine needs a valve adjustment... is there a certain noise I should be listening for or what? I got a b18c wit 109k miles and then a b18b wit 95k miles. Reason I ask some guy was looking at my car during a meet and he listened to the idle and said I need a valve adjustment. Any help?

well..... u listen to ur engine and feel ur engine above the valve cover. u will hear "da da da" sound. i recently go to the mechanic.... he said i need to to valve adjustment too. have fun!

this brings up my question. how do i check valve clearances/make adjustments. is there a diy or a good write up anywhere. havent typed it into the search YET.
