what the hell is this? (ls block)

sorry about the pic... its the black box on the back of the block, also, sorry for the dumbass post, i just picked up a LS shortblock.... and im trying to figure out what i want to do with it.. kinda rusty and high milage... any suggestions?

thats the breather chamber. It mounts to a big hole in the block, air travels out of the block, into the breather chamber (I believe it goes through the chamber to help get some of the oil out of the air before it goes through the rest of the pcv system) and then up through the pcv valve.
