what is the difference with the fuel filter design here

i got the car with 188k on it, poorly maintained, and when i mean poorly maintained i mean, the tranny, which was replaced at 90k, the fluid had never been changed, the antifreeze was almost 100% straight in the rad, none of the filters had ever been changed, the brake fluid is black (ive yet to solve that issue yet as the rear calipers are frozen and are expensive).
But my big question here is the fuel filter i just changed, i noticed that the wix filter im using to replace the original one, is not open at the top, it appears the fuel comes in the bottom, and goes out the sides and around, where as it appeared that the old filter was straight through. The car runs fine, im just curious as to why the new filter is designed differently.

Probably wont find a straight answer on here for that. More than likely it was a design change for whatever reason, usually lifespan or critical change that could have affected something down the line. Its probably a better design in all.
Maybe i mis read your question. The actual housing is different? Shouldn't be, sounds like a wrong part or some cheap replacement. The integra requires the fuel filter to have a straight through design. Fuel delivery from bottom goes up through the filter and out the top to the banjo nut onto the fuel line and fuel rail.
Wrong part im guessing
Unless it works it works fine, i guess stay with it?

same housing, right part #, seems that the old one was closed to my mistake, however on the opposing side, flow goes up if im not mistaken, so when im looking at the top of the filter, i see metal on the inside, i guess the top of the filter element, when i look through the bottom, i see the inner part of the filter, and vise versa on the old one.
