Instead of one cam lobe actuating each valve, there are two - one optimized for low RPM stability & fuel efficiency, with the other designed to maximize high RPM power output. Switching between the two cam lobes is determined by engine oil pressure, engine temperature, vehicle speed, and engine speed. As engine RPM increases, a locking pin is pushed by oil pressure to bind the high RPM cam follower for operation. From this point on, the valve opens and closes according to the high-speed profile, which opens the valve further and for a longer time. The DOHC VTEC system has high and low RPM cam lobe profiles on both the intake and exhaust valve camshafts.
Honda also introduced a 3-stage VTEC system in select markets, which combines the features of both SOHC VTEC and SOHC VTEC-E. At low speeds, only one intake valve is used. At medium speeds, two are used. At high speeds, the engine switches to a high-speed cam profile as in regular VTEC. Thus, both low-speed economy and high-speed efficiency and power are improved.

Go on Hondaswap.com and search LS/Vtec
There should be alot of threads about that on there.
I know i posted one that tells you everything you need.
If i were you i would just get a USDM GSR motor.
I wouldnt mess with an LS/VTEC, you sound like you have no hands-on working experience.
And no, installing an Intake or replacing sparkplugs count as hands on.
BTW, Theres no HONDA Acura LS. Its either or!

why is spending 1-2 grand for 30-40 whp "the best way to go"? a gsr swap is better because you don't have to worry about all the misc. issues/gremlins and you can rev your engine to 8k without worries. heck, if you're going to spend 2 grand on a swap or ls/vtec conversions, turbo the ls and have double the whp
ls/vtecs are overrated
turbo>all

yea, but what if the person like all-motor?
ls/vtecs arent over-rated if you know what to do with them, if i had to do it again i would have ls/vtec'd my ls engine instead of swapping in a poorman ITR(gsr block/b16 head). with buying a new engine you have the gremlins of messed up bearings, worn rings, bad seals....etc. building a ls/vtec the right way everything would be fresh.

My favorite type of flame is the "Your punctuation/spelling is disgusting". They usually have at least 3 spelling or punctuation errors, and sentences RARELY begin with an uppercase letter. Look towards the top for proof.
i'm not saying that they are overrated if you know what you are doing and have the knowledge/cash to build a mean one. i'm saying that they are overrated for people like the OP who have a grand to spend and immediately want vtec. if you have a perfectly good running LS motor in your car and only 1 grand to spend( i'm assuming ), there are a lot better choices then ls/vtec. i've thought about ls/vtec, and I decided to instead spend my money on boltons, rebuilding my engine, and some cams/ headwork. at some point i will go turbo
to each his own
to each his own
I would have to say that LS-Vtec engines, B20B with vtec head are definitely NOT for noobs. I'm not flaming; it just seems from the post that you are not completely mechanically inclined.
If you do get the B20B, you will notice a lot of unHonda-like torque at low RPMS, but it will be a slow motor. I know; I've had friends that have had this motor before "vtec-ing" it. I would just say to do a lot of research and use the RED search button near the top. A lot could be learned.

Sorry, but they are over-rated. And that was by far the worst defense of ls/v i have ever heard.

x2, not to mention the amount of money it takes to make a 1/2way decent ls/v you could have built a turbo or built a up a perfectly good b18c. If you have the know how and do it yourself it could be worth it, but if you knew that much why not build up anyother engine. Everyone has their own opinion of ls-vtack. In short i would recommend not shoving a mismatched block and head together.

Keep the LS. Get the head milled, put some performance cams add I/H/E. You'll be ripping on stock integ gsr's all day non vtec. Boost it later and you'll be ripping on alot more.
