Vtec Switch?
Send 12 volts the the vtec solinoid. 12v on one side of the toggle switch, and vtec solinoid on the other side of the switch.

To hit vtec whenever you want.
To not fall out of vtec when you shift.

I dont see how those ideas are stupid, its his car he should be able to do whatever he wants to it. Just because you dont approve of the idea doesnt mean its stupid.

switching over to vtec too early will more than likely cause a loss in power. too late and the powerband isnt maximized.
if you're falling out of vtec when you shift you're either shifting way too slow or you have an ls tranny.
