Im sorry, a 2 stage vtec? Please explain...
It's been discussed several times before - what you're hearing on a GSR isnt so much vtec but the secondary butterflies opening up.
If your car is fairly stock, you vtec should be smooth and somewhat quiet. It isnt until you get into heavy modifications that the vtec engagement becomes louder and more noticable. Mainly because of the aggressive secondary camshaft lobes.

If your car is stock, you probably wont hear much of anything.
With intake/exhaust, you should here the vtec crossover through the exhaust @ 4400 rpms and the im butterflys opening through the intake @ 6500 rpms.

If you disconnect the secondaries, Vtec will open louder... You will loose some low end torque but you will gain top end power.. But if you don't have at least an intake and exhaust your not going to hear it...

Sorry that was off topic. for most motors when the VTEC hits hard it either means that it has modifications done without proper tuning to smooth out the crossover or you are running very aggressive cams that makes the crossover between your lobes very drastic.
Damn my VTEC kicks hard dogg!!!
