valve spring install quick quest.
Well your whole point was to not take the head off. If you drop a valve down the cylinder, you need to take the head off. You need to buy the adapter that screws into the spark pulg hole and hook it up to a compressor. This keeps it full of pressure and allows you to compress the spring w/o moving the valve.

Only 2 cylinders will be on top at a time. So unless you plan on only taking apart the valvetrain on 2 cylinders, putting it all backtogether, then doing the other two, then you need to blow air into the cylinders, or what some people do is take some rope/string and push it thru the spark plug hole to fill up the space in the cylinder. I would probably put all cylinders at halfway thru the stroke and do that.

I dont know how many miles are on the car, but you might want to go ahead and take the head off and replace the head gasket just for a little extra insurance.

Like I did with my parts... I guess paying some people to do the work isn't so bad is it?

I have changed valvespings and retainers on more than a couple of engines with the head on. I do one cylinder at a time, and rotate the piston in that cylinder to TDC when I do it. I use a leakdown tester to hold the valves up (it puts compressed air in the cylinder). I also put shop rags in the oil return ports to prevent keepers from falling in. Novice mechanics should not attempt this procedure, but an experienced hand should have little trouble.
