Default Type R Trans

I have a chance to buy a Type R gearbox in good condition. I am seriously considering this for the quicker gear ratio.

Will I automatically end up with LSD also, if I do this? Type Rs all have LSD, right? It's right in the OEM gearbox isn't it?

Yes all type r's should have lsd...FYI the gear ratios are a whole lot different..i have a 94 GSR that came with a 00 type r tranny..i sold it and got a GSR tranny..1st 2nd and 3rd feel the same...and are close anyway..4th and 5th are a little longer on the GSR side..but heres how the gear ratios break down..

GSR ..... Type R (USDM)
1st 3.230 1st 3.230
2nd 1.900 2nd 2.105
3rd 1.360 3rd 1.458
4th 1.034 4th 1.107
5th .787 5th .848
Final Drive 4.400 Final Drive 4.400

good luck with your decision..

Hey GSR

Thanks for the input. I'm pretty sure this is what I'm gonna do. It's more bang for the buck -in my little mind- since limited slip is an added bonus. So, hey, why did you take the Type R tranny out of your car and put the GSR one back? From my point of view, that' negative progress. Enlighten me!!!

he probably just didn't need to shorter gear ratios and lsd... maybe he does a lot of highway driving and would rather have the longer gears in 4th and 5th = lower RPMs... some guys stay with the gsr tranny and throw in an LSD if they need it

yah..the ls tranny is great when u get to really high horsepower.u really have no choice, the gsr and b16 and type r will rip through gears to fast and you never get any power down..but my setup for example..ill push it on the dyno for bragging rights but on the street ill run a little lower boost...so the gsr tranny will be great on the street to get moving, but as far as drag and high HP the ls is def a good idea

The ITR tranny would be $2100 from GearSpeed in California. The only reason I'm telling everybody this is because I'm not gonna do it.

I'm dropping a Quaife lsd into my existing GSR gearbox.

Heck, a brand new ITR gearbox from Acura can be had for $2100. That is not deal for a used transmission.

In GearSpeed's defense, their tranny is rebuilt with carbon syncros, and it was $1900 (I was figuring some other costs). They would also buy my used core back from me, bringing it down to ~$1500. This is a good company, especially if your tranny is fried.

I'm still better off with what I'm doing, though.

Perhaps the transmission is more valuable due to the upgraded synchros. Hopefully a warranty came with that.

Why are you choosing the Quaife unit over the ITR LSD? If you are doing it because you are pushing 300+ WHP, that is a good reason. Otherwise, read this:

https://honda-tech.com/zero...28924

Quaife cannot say that their product is any betyter than the ITR LSD for traction (torque bias ratio).
