trans issues
so i cant figure out why my transmission is slipping. B18b with a ys1 tranny. i replaced my clutch cable and the trans has been rebuilt. i think it might be in my clutch but it is only about a year old and its an exedy street/strip clutch. i dont accelerate in 5th gear hardly and when i pass on the highway i have to shift into 3rd to get any torque. any suggestions or similar problems? fluid maybe?
I doubt fluid has anything to do with it...have you adjusted the clutch at all? When you put on the new cable, it's probably a lot tighter than your old one which tends to stretch over the years. Try adjusting your clutch cable.

I can't remember if the flywheel is supposed to have a step in it, meaning that the friction surface is supposed to be a little higher than the mounting points for the pressure plate. If it's supposed to and if your flywheel was machined without that step, then you'll have some problems.
Okay, hang on - we need a better description of EXACTLY what is happening.
I'm confused when you say that your transmission is slipping. Technically the clutch is part of the transmission, so strictly speaking it's not an incorrect statement but it's not typically used that way.
If your clutch is slipping, you will notice the engine "running away" from the transmission in higher gears. Is this what is happening? It doesn't suprise me that you need to downshift into 3rd to "get any torque" as Integras are not known for top gear acceleration.
As garados said, make sure that your flywheel and clutch are properly matched. The installed height of the clutch, on the flywheel and relative to the transmission, is critical to getting the clampload needed to transmit full engine torque.

allenp....you seem very knowledgeable. i hope you read this.
ok.....i think i have 2wo different problems. i think the slipping is coming from the clutch being worn out. lets say i am traveling 45 mph. i shift to 5th gear and put the accelerator to the floor. the engine will be bounching off my 8400 rpm redline while the car is losing momentum. i simply cannot use 5th and sometime 4th gear. the trans is a ys1 i bought this summer. it is in perfect condition. so i think it is in my clutch.
the second problem...i think i blew a ring around a piston. i noticed a thin layer of oil around the head which suggests to me the headstuds were not properly torqued after the engine was assembled or i need to have them retorqued. i could also feel oil and air "puffing" out of the top of the head when i took the oil cap off. i was told this is known as "blowback". as i was driving home from the shop. the engine over heated and died. when i started it again. it sounded like a V8 that dropped a rod.
i am currently looking for a dc2 as i am fed up with my da.....but do you think the engine is salvageable?

I'll do my best!
First of all, I will have to plead ignorance on the engine question. I am a clutch/tranny/suspension guy, but engines are not my expertise.
From your description, yes, it does sound like a clutch issue. However, it might be a combination of the system you are using.
If the total installed height of the clutch/disc/flywheel is not matched to the transmission's installed height, then the throwout bearing may be "pre-loading" the clutch, causing it to never be fully engaged. To determine this, with the clutch bolted up, measure the distance from the fingers of the clutch diaphragm springs down to the surface of the engine block where the trans bolts up. Then, measure the distance from the front mounting surface of your transmission down to the throwout bearing. This distance should be greater than the first dimension, ensuring installed clearance.
If that's okay, you'll have to unbolt your clutch and inspect it for anything obvious.
HTH! Good luck... This stuff is no fun.

wait a minute... you changed the clutch cable but you're wondering if changing the fluid would help? which is it?
anyways allenp seems to have you well covered, it does sound like a clutch issue (unless the cable was sticking or the slave cylinder was failing and keeping the clutch in the depressed position). in any case it sounds like your clutch has been slipping for a while (either due to being worn or a faulty throwout system if you can explain which one) and you may need a new clutch since the current one may have overheated.
edit: if you meant tranny fluid, no that wouldnt' help

thanks guys for all of your help....i got fed up and went out and bought an 01 cl type s...i figured that would take care of any issues i am having with my current car. i pulled the motor out of my teggy and you're right, the clutch is shot. the motor is on the engine stand getting prepped for a monster T72 turbo setup. i have decided since i have the cl now, i can turn my teggy into an all black nighttime terror. i have already painted it "mad max" flat black--black rota's(fake sw388's-hey cant have the real thing might as well get the next best), i pulled out my other racing seat....car is already stripped of unneccessaries like A/C, power steering, ABS, interior...roll cage on the way.....i'm talking no tags, no insurance, see a cop--run.....if anybody lives in central ohio and shares my affinity for law breaking and blacked out cars....hit me up....i'm always down for night drifting.
