Default Tranny Problem HELP!!!!!

It's my little brother's car, a 94 LS 4 door, got about 160k on it.

FOr some reason it is really hard to shift form gear to gear. The clutch pedel push down fine, it's just the shifter. Really hard to get in gear. All fluid seems good. Engine revs good. No engine light came on. Just the damn shifter, also gear grabs on pretty tightly, like an after market clutch. Sometimes going from 5th to 3rd makes a slight twirling noise, not like grinding, but more of a swirling noise, like a jet engine dying down. Weird.
We concluded that it is either the shifter rods being bad, maybe bad bushing. Or the tranny itself.
Any ideas? thanks in advance

Probably a bearing or syncro problem.

I also have the problem of having to really push the shifter to get it into gear. Its almost impossible to get it into reverse. Ive tried going from 1st to reverse...dont work like it used to. Also tried every gear then reverse, dont work.

If it's no particular gear It's not a synchro and if it's every gear I would say it is the clutch, but the whirling sound would definatly be a bearing.

Bearing/Syncro problem

My buddy just had the same problem. His R would not go into reverse at all. I think it was his 5th/reverse syncro sleeve.

Check these threads out, he made a few threads about it

Wow, umm that kind of work is way to difficult for me and my dad to deal with? How much do you think that would cost at a shop to have done? Or would it be cheaper for me to pick up a new gsr tranny and put it in myself since no labor?

Call and ask a few local shops.

If you don't mind shipping the tranny then you can consider sending it to;
Gearspeed
King Motorsports

I am sure there are more but those two come to mind off the top of my head.

So i just called and got an estimate of $1500-2500 to rebuild the tranny. Would it be better just to buy a used tranny instead.
But it's really hard to get in all the gear though, the reverse seems to be the best one to shift into. Any ideas on that?
