timing belt problem
so my timing belt popped on me while driving... i was going about 50-60 mph, so we replace the timing belt ...... we put the timing belt on and its weird, its tight in certain areas, then when we turned the crank about 3/4 of the way the belt gets loose again.. i dont know whats the problem... its the cam on the intake side of the head that the belt get loose on... I dont know we may try to re tension the belt again later?? any ideas??
Hey MySpace dude, thanks for being my only friend on MySpace, lol.
Did you read a how-to on replacing the belt, because what you describe is normal. When you spin the crank counter clockwise, the cams have resistence from the valve spring tension and the pistons from compression. So it will spin easy for a bit, then get hard to turn for a bit.
Once the cam gears are at TDC and the crank pulley has its white line on the lower cover pointer, you are supposed to turn the crank pulley counter clockwise only 3 teeth on the cam gears, which will properly tension the tensioner. Then retighten the tensionor bolt. This is simplified, you must look up the procedure.
This has been covered many times, try a search.

Yeah its kinda a sticky situation we've got going here....we get the belt nice and tight, once the tensioner is tighted we turned the crank over just to make sure we didn't here any noises. due to the fact that the belt orginally broke while driving! and like Shaun said about 1/2 - 3/4 thru one revolution on the crank the belt gets loose and as you keep on turning it over it gets tight again like it was when we first started. but the belt never justs timing when it gets loose, it only gets noticablly loose but not enough to jump teeth! we plan to check it out again.....
anyone have anyother thoughts!!

It doesnt sound like you tightened the tension on the tbelt properly. You need to let the tensioner take in the slack when its "loose" as you say, then tighten it. That way its tight full rotation.

You dont need anymore input. You didnt tighten the belt right. When it gets loose on the intake side. Loosen the tensioner and let it take in the slack. Then tighten it, turn the crank a 1/4 turn, loosen/retighten, turn, repeat 3 times.
